need help! 500x2 rockford fosgate amp overheating hella bad!
hey guys i just got a new hatch with 2 12's and a rockford fosgate 500x2 amp and its overheating soooo bad. like it even burned me. ive tryed everything, bigger/smaller ground wire, different power wire, i even added a little fan from a computer to the outside of the amp and its still overheating bad and ive asked everyone and no one can figure it out. so i came here to see if anyone here can help me. please i traded my crx with beat that worked hella good for this hatch with this beat sooo please if anyone can help me it would b greatly appreciated! thanks much love
ive tried everything. and ive had it bridged, not bridged and ive also went with bigger amp wiring but i dont have a fuse on my power wire. could that be causing it?
well you should always fuse it. but unless it's shorting somewhere i don't see why that would cause the problem. if the amp is shorting, then that could cause the heat problem, and since there is no fuse to blow, it keeps having issues.
sounds possible, eliminating all other options the amp could be a problem. which specific amp is it, and what size power and ground wires are you running??

Can we get the model numbers of the speakers that you are using and the model number of the amp so you can get the correct help. Post that information before we go any futher.

i have 4 gauge ground wire and 4 gauge power wire too. umm the amp is rockford fosgate 500x2 model number p5002 and one of the subs is sony xplod 1300 watt Sony XS-L124P5B. the other is pyle PLT-AB12 Subwoofer
Are your ground and power the same length, and what are you grounding to?
How long are you able to bump b4 it gets that hot?
Put a fuse in the power and see what happens. If it pops, then it's probably shorting out. If not, amp might have an internal issue.

Sounds like you have a problem with the switching supply of the amplifier.
Try just running one speaker does it still get hot? If driving one speaker and it still gets hot take a dmm and measure the impedence of the speaker. If its 4 ohms then as sounds as though he power supply may be on its way out.
Usually what happens is one of the transistor gets stuck "on" which produces a ton of heat and eventually causes the others to fail.

ystop- naw my power is alot longer than my ground. i can only bump for a few minutes if that. and ive got it grounded to the read perch were the two bolts come thru for the read suspension.
nsxxtreme- ya even if i hook up just one speaker it gets hot. but wat i dont understand is that for the first 2 weeks i had the amp and subs it didnt get hot or anything.

I've heard ppl say they should be same length, but everything I've read says it should be as short as possible (which would make sense why companies include less ground than power in their amp wiring kits) and I've never had a prob w/ short ground length myself. Check this article out about wiring:

If changing your ground doesn't help, then prob still having an amp issue like nsxxtreme suggested. Happens outta nowhere sometimes.

ya everything works fine they sound good and everything. the amp was on the back of my subs behind the rear seats. but ive takin it off and put the seats down and still nuttin. and ive changed my ground acouple of times. like my buddy said too big of ground so went with smaller wire and still. it was even melting the power wire at the battery and were it plugs into the amp. it even started to melt the smaller ground wire i had on there. so it seems like from ur guys's suggestions that my amp took a **** pretty much huh?
if it's melting wire you have a short somewhere, check your power wire for any metal on wire contact, i don't want you to burn your car up.
you can't have to big of a ground, unless it doesn't fit into the amp. What you want is the thickest wire, running the shortest distance.
ya ive got a thick *** wire on it. its the thickest wire ive ever had for a ground wire. and i dont wanna burn my **** up either its the only car i got and no job to get a new one. and there really isnt any wire touching metal that i can c. ive even ripped up part of my carpet that the wires under to look at it and i dont see any, so im pretty much under the assumption that my amps ****ed.
Do you have a buddy who has an amp you can borrow to hook up and see what his does in your car? If you do, try it out. If the problem goes away, then your amp is toast.
Hahaha! I was just thinkin, "remember not to buy anything from this guy!", I just wasn't gonna say it unless s/o said it first...
you have to have the same size power and ground wires. take the subs out and see how they are wired. the ohm load could be too low for the amp. you can't just take wires out and start switching them around. oh and get a fuse for that power wire before your car catches on fire
My amp does the amp does the exact same thing, I have the same or atleast similar setup as you do, but see my Rockford amp says clean in and clean out, which it never did that when I first got the amp, but after my ground wire ripped, the sound went to ****, got distorted but I think my ground wire may need to be re wrapped into my other cords cause it’s connected to the end of the bolt on my battery, but if someone can explain why my amp keeps saying clean in and out that would be great cause it used to never do this until now
