Default 92 Accord Coupe, Rev limit 3500, CEL constant on

I've searched pretty extensively here and while I've found many people that have similar issues, I'm finding few that have posted how they ended up resolving them. So here goes.

1992 Accord couple 195k,5sp. Picked up cheap as a DD and ran good on a mild test drive. Got home, took it out for a beat run and theres a glass ceiling at 3500. Found enough information on here to assume the car is in limp mode, but att this point i had no noticeable CEL. Jumpered the Diagnostic clip, still nothing. Pulled the dash apart, found that someone had blacked over the lense. I pulled the lense and now I can see that the light never goes out. It seems to run pretty good up until this rev limit.



I found in a thread on here that constant on on a civic means check ECU ground and power. This is an accord, so I'm jumping to conclusions that code applies to both.

The SRS light is also blacked out, can't remember what it was doing. I'm determined to figure this out and post my resolution here so other can figure out too.

Anyone else been through this before and have any suggestions?

So the light stays on while trying to get the codes or while driving. If you tried to get the code and nothing came back, have you re-set the ECU.

The light comes on as soon as the key goes into the "on" posistion and stays on, jumpered or not. By resetting the ECU do you mean disconnecting the battery?

you can disconnect the battery for 10 min. or find the fuse for the ecu on the fuse block under the hood. if you disconnect the battery you may need the code for your radio, then again you have an older model so I'm not sure if those cars had anti theft on the radios.

Sounds like you need to black-out that CEL again.

Ok, so if the light never shuts off its probably an ECU related issue? I would love to be able to get it to flash, figure out what code its throwing and fix it. I can't get to that point unless theres something I'm overlooking. The CEL on the dash is supposed to flash the code right? No like a light on the ECU or something else I'm missing.

Same issue in a co-workers 1992. New ECU (well, used from a junkyard that was known good) did the trick.

Look at it this way. The light is supposed to flash when you jumper the pins right?

If it doesn't, then it is obviously broken somehow. Either the wiring connector you are jumpering is broken (I mean wiring in the harness somewhere). Or the ECU is broken. More than likely it is the ECU.

Ok, pulled the ECU, opened it up and found nothing that looked abnormal to a common person such as myself. Is there anyway to test one of these things?

If not, I guess I'll be hitting the pull a part. Do these ECU's have a history of being unreliable....as in is a junkyard one going to be junk too?

gimme the code on the ecu if you cant find on in the junk yard i should have one(known working good on pull out) that ill sell for 125 plus shipping

Success. New ECU and now the thing will rev out and jumpering the diagnostic plug brings up a code 41 (4 longs,1 short).
