changing timing belt - engine out of car
how do you get the crank pulley bolt off of an egine which is out of the car? i want to change the timing belt on my new swap before it goes in, but i'm not really sure how to get the bolt holding the pulley off.
Put it on an engine stand. Harbor Freight has the for $40. Find a way to keep the flywheel from spinning. I use this piece off a manual tranny to hold the crank so I can loosten the crank pully bolt. Get it on an engine stand and it will be much easier.
bump.
i don't really want to buy an engine stand, since it'll be the only time i use it. any other way i can do it?
i know i should change the water pump while i'm at it. what else should i change as well? how do i change the crankshaft oil seals?

Get a Chain Wrench from Sears. Use the chain wrench to hold the pulley. Use a long breaker bar for the bolt. Did that this weekend and it worked perfectly.
like you said above change the front and rear main seals. you will have to pull the oil pan, the crankshaft and the oil pump to replace those seals...

if u just got the engine. i would recomed changing the belt, waterpump, camseals, sparkplugs, wires, cap and rotor,,,,,,,at the bare minimun change the waterpump and belt......its not that bad,,like said before just get the chain wrench to hold the crank and get a long *** breaker bar for the bolt....usually stuck pretty well....
use something to jam the flywheel, like a thick screwdriver, then get a breaker bar nad have your friend jump on it. HOLD ON TO THE MOTOR FOR DEAR LIFE!
that things a pain in the ***. i had to send my buddies in to a shop. it wouldnt budge. even took them an hour to get it off.

to replace the rear main all you have to do is take off the flywheel and it's right there...not 1005 sure about the front but i believe you don't need to touch the oil pan.
and the front seal is behind the oil pump.
