my friend has a engine he bought about a year ago.. he said he bought it off line and was told it was the stock replacement for his 97 honda civic.

he has been having problems with the motor ever since he put it in about a year ago....with the motor being sluggish and when it hits 5500 it takes off because of vtec.

the code on block says d16a the timing cover says d16 vtec and its a sohc vtec head on it.... the dipstick is off to the right like a y8 but i dont know what block it is.... also im thinking his problem is that hes got wrong ecu,dizzy and injectors...... but idk

its probably the D16a VTI motor. use a p28, assuming the car has vtec. You can also use P08 IF you can get your hands on one.

Sluggish:

Plugs, wires, cap, rotor. Any CEL codes? Is the ignition timing set correctly?

 

i read all of it but looks like hes got a jdm motor...... and see that it looks like its same as d16z6 which is 92-95civic/del sol but its also similar to the y8....

what head gasket/plugs/wires/ timing belt would i use?

also by sluggish i mean no power at all till vtec kicks in hard as crap
which is around 5500 and ill check timing when i go to the shop tonight....

also i think its sluggish because needs p28 like stated above which ill also try tonight

Can you please clarify a few things so that we may better understand the issue?

Year, make, and model of vehicle, including trim level as in EX/DX/LX/CX/HX etc?

What ECU is he running?

Are there any check engine codes being stored?

What distributor is he using? One that came with the engine? His original stock one?

Were any wiring changes needed at the time of install such as distributor plugs, injectors, etc?

What VTEC valve is he using, and did the D16A come with a VTEC solenoid that had two solenoids and plugs? Does it have a VTEC oil pressure switch on it?

Is VTEC actually working, as in, can you actually hear it? It's harder to hear on the SOHC, but I'm just curious.

I saw in your quote that you are going to "try a P28" but you need to know that you'll need a jumper harness unless you've got the rarest of rare OBD2 P28.

I'm wondering if the ECU your friend has is his stock ECU if it's not looking for the CKF sensor, and that the JDM D16A probably doesn't have a CKF sensor. If this is the case the engine will run like crap if the ECU runs it in limp mode due to a lack of input from any number of sensors.

Help us help you - give us more info. Pics of distributor, injectors, ECU, etc. would certainly help too.

 

okay my friend isnt really a car guy so he had his popop install the motor about a year ago i guess..... hes a friend of mine that i havent talked to for like 5 years until now so i didnt do the swap nor no much about the swap....

havent looked at car yet today. but its a p2p ecu in their now.... hes got a jumper harness im not to sure from what obd to what obd..... but im pretty sure its obd2 to obd1 in which i can use for my p28.

their were no wires cut need injectors/ dizzy to indicate that they were changed over to obd1 also no sort of harness that rywire has....

from the looks of it im sure its probly which is a obd2 dizzy/injectors/ecu
which is making it run like crap....

his car is a 1997 civic ex 2 door btw....

d16a is supposed to be a obd2a (96-00) motor but i am currently running obd1 (92-95) in my 93 civic ex, im also running the p28 but have same no power problem so am thinking about possibly running a p08 if i can find one or a bigger p72 for dohc motor which could be a little much
