Default My A/C is brutal

So I did a search, and I'm not certain if anything I found is my problem. There was a few things that were close, but I wasn't sure.

Basically what happens is, if I turn on my A/C it will run fine from anywhere between 2-10 minutes and then I get this horrible, loud grinding noise. Almost like if you stick a wooden broom handle into a fan spinning at high speeds. I checked all my fans, and nothing is hitting them at all, and they're turning fine. If you tolerate the horrible noise a bit longer, you'll notice a heavy shaking starts up. It feels like my entire engine is just shaking. This freaked me out, and I haven't turned my A/C on since. I've spoken to a few people and one person said it was the A/C Compressor going bad, and the other said it may be some sort of line (can't remember what he called it) running to the Compressor that's vibrating. Winter is just around the corner, and I've dealt with the hot weather driving with just my windows down, but I'm going to be a grouchy dude when snow starts falling and I can't defog, or be warm in my car in fear of something awful happening to my engine from all the shaking.

I had a similiar problem once and it was the compressor. My a/c was I cold for a varried ammount of time, and them BAM it was like a ton of crap was tossed under the hood. Noise like you wouldn't bealieve.

Could be a compressor, or compressor clutch. It is normal for clutchs to wear out, depending on use. If your compressor appears to be the problem, this could be the sympton, not the actual problem, ie all refrigerant oil leaking out a hole in the evaportator, which would cause the compressor to fail. Install a new compressor, without fixing the oil leak, and you will have the same problem.
