Default my ls-t build ( boost advice)

So I'm looking for some advise on how much boost I can run safely and daily with my setup. This is my first build also. But was thinking about running 12lbs of boost as dd. Any input would help thanks
Setup-
96 ls motor. 149k miles on it.
Head has stage 1 crower cams, blox intake mani 550cc rc injectors.
Block is stock with arp rod bolts
Arp head studs.

just a lil fyi, 12lbs if boost isnt the same on all turbos.. the size of the turbo matters.. but to answer ur question, my buddy had pretty much the same setup as urs and threw in a drag3 turbo kit and ran 8lbs boost for dd.. had a switch for 14lbs but rarely used it.. and of course he did have to get it tuned.. he said the 8lbs of boost had him around 220whp, but i never saw the dyno sheet, so who knows??

compression test your motor to see if its healthy enough for boost.

you dont need to touch the head to make good power on stock internals reliably

here is my friends dyno chart on his completely stock ls and a gt3255b turbo

if youre looking to spend money to make power, forge your bottom end and crank up the boost.

great thread to look through

this is my tuners old set-up

No more than i drive the car it probably just now is hitting the 80 thousand mark.

Needless to say i got a little bored with the old turbo setup and changed it up a little bit. The old setup made 308hp & 268ft-lbs of torque on 14psi. The old setup consisted of the following.

- stock block b18b1
- garrett 60 trim t3/t4 to4e
- a log manifold
- 3 inch downpipe and exhaust
- other normal turbo parts
- tuned on eCtune at 14psi on 93 octane

This time around all i changed up was the turbo manifold and the turbo. Everything else remained the same. This being a budget build like mentioned earlier i picked up a ramhorn manifold off of ebay (yes ebay ). I also picked up a used Holset Hx35 for next to nothing.

Also this time around i upped the boost to 18 psi, and switched fuels. This time around it was tuned on 110 octane. Here are some results.

14psi vs 17psi. Slowly upping the boost and working out a few problems

The final results at 18psi.

The car..

I'm running 11psi with no other bolt ons (no cams,no IM ,) and i'm running on a stock clutch
on a bone stock ls
Makes decent power but depends on the turbo

I'd make sure the engine is in good shape for boost, then set it at 8psi for a daily driver

at 11psi on my stock clutch starts to slip a bit. so 8psi is safe and still makes good power for daily driving

id hope the op would upgrade his clutch for boost. And honestly, its not PSI that matters, its how much power you actually make.

I DD my car at 13-15psi and I know people who DD on more boost then that, but it doesnt matter if youre daily driving a car with a tiny *** turbo @ 18psi making 200whp, see my point?

Yeah, i know it's just with he other bolts on he'll make a bit more horsepower if he uses a turbo the same as mine

so if he didn't upgrade the clutch 8-9psi sould be good for about what i'm making with 11psi with no supporting mods .. or i could be wrong

i misread and saw that he had the head built already with arp bolts. I thought thats what he was going to do.

Anyways, OP might as well upgrade the clutch, no point in boosting and keeping the stock one imo. New clutches that will hold power can be had for 300, and thats from competition.

Something like your standard 57 trim or 60 trim would be great for a daily driver. It should take too long to spool, that and you can still daily drive it and stay out of boost while cruising around saving you on gas mileage.
