Default 1996 Accord Axle/CV issue, maybe...?

Hopefully someone here can help me, my apologies if this has already been addressed, I've searched the threads and haven't found the answer myself. My 96' Accord M/T has been making grinding/poping noises from what appeared to be the passenger axle while turning left. Thinking it was a CV issue I intended to replace both axles this weekend. This morning however, after several turns I hear a pop from the passenger side and suddenly no more power is making it to my wheels. What makes me think this is more than just an axle issue is that even in neutral I can hear some slight grinding, like something is trying to grab but isn't. The gears are fine so far as I can tell, but I'm worried this has escalated into a transmission issue. Any advice? Thanks.

Well, did you check your axles? Sounds like one broke, thus no power to the wheels. Axles are cheap, replace them and see if it solves the problem. If it doesn't, obviously its your tranny.

Yeah my axle definitely didn't break. Guess it's down to trial and error.

Does the car roll easily while in gear with the engine shut off?

Yeah it rolls easily enough. Though the grinding is still noticeable. When it is in neutral the passenger axle spins and I hear a grinding noise, so now I'm fairly confident it's a CV issue. I'm working on getting the passenger axle out right now. We'll see how it goes after it's replaced, though I'm doing the driver's side as well while I'm at it.

make sure your axles are tight where it sits on the input side of your transmission ( up and down motion ). If it has excessive play up and down, I would suspect the differential bearings are bad or going bad. If you inspect your axles and they are good but you are still making a CV sounding click or pop your Differential bearings could be going bad. When i bought my cd7, i had similar symptoms and determined it to be differential bearings. Its a fairly cheap fix too.. around a $70.00 fix in bearings. The smaller bearing you can get at the parts store, the bigger bearing you will have to order from Honda.

Check to make sure that your wheel bairings are still good too. They could be a possible reason for the grinding and the noise.

i would say to replace your cv axle...now is it just the passenger side that has no power? does the driver side still move when put to gear? if so i think its really the cv axle that needs to be addressed
