Default im trying to understand gearing and picking right transmission for the motor

im gonna use frankacura sig numbers for example assuming he has a gsr tranny on that 1/4 mile and stock 15 wheels.

B18B/VTEC 203Whp 145tq 13.02@105Mph CTR cams in Full teg 95

im using the zealautowerks transmission gearing calculator and graph

http://www.zealautowerks.com/transcalc.php

i input a gsr tranny with 205/55/15 tires into green graph

and LS tranny with 205/45/16 tires into the blue graph

his trap speed is 105mph at the line.
which with GSR tranny would be at 6700rpm in 4th gear meaning he would have to shift right before the line.

if he had the LS tranny he would be at 8200rpm in 3rd gear at finish line.

so wheres the fine line between shift losses and having a longer geared tranny and using a lower gear to get you to the line?

what im trying to understand is how to properly pick the transmission for your specific engine power and times.

or does the shorter geared transmission always win regardless of power( im talking about NA here not turbo)

well one thing you gotta think about with tranny is also what hafe track speed would be and time , with the gsr tranny i belive hafe track speed will be greater , and i dont think you wanna go threw the line at top of 3rd in ls tranny if i can pull up some links i had saved for readin tranny stuff ill post em

these are all links with some good readin you gotta pick threw some of the bullshit dont let the title scare you away either cause some are askin about a boosted setup but the same idea and principles appy to all motor
i forget wich one of those links have another link to them to a site that realy breaks down the concept of what tranny would be best for your needs and track

if you want the fastest track trans it would be the shortest geard tranny that you are able to get good traction with and not have to shift into 5th going down the track

so then mixing gears would be a better way to adjust than just swapping a stock tranny?

like for turbo high power, swapping the low gears for longer ones would be better
and for NA swapping the low gears for shorter ones would be better as well?

well in all honesty i dont like the idea of swapping gears for traction if i was boosted i change my boost by gear options less boost in the first 2 gears , and maybee a bigger tire to gain traction back , the most gear swappin i would ever do is ls fith but that is just me , you can build a realy nice tranny by swappin out all oem gears that you want , but i find it a hassle because you would probly have to order all new shims and everything and could get pretty costy sourcing gears and parts

i think i am beeing a lil unreasonable in my tranny demands here lol.

i just realized that i want somethign that cant be done
i want to drive on the freeway at lil below 3000 RPM @65mph
then i want to be able to have enough power to accelerate without downshifting to change lanes if needed

and then be able to get good 1/4 times as well as holding up to ocassional traffic light runs against vw's and other typical honda enemies.

which theres only one conclusion, i should be driving a V6 instead of 4 cyl or a bigger 4 cylinder than gsr stock bore.

oh maybe i can buy a tranny for track and swap it out evry time i go lol ( giggity giggity go allright!!!)

Not necessarily. Longer gears benefit high horsepower n/a/ setups, just like they do for turbo cars...

so in other words its like driving an automatic 4 speed with an extra gear for freeway.

what power are we talking about?

is there a way to calculate that power and gear ratio to match them perfectly to the 1/4 mile/

cuz if i look at the gear calculator graph for example 11.38 you are at 120MPH
so if you had a gsr with LS tranny and 17x45 tires you would be at 121 in 3rd gear@9000rpm. but how much power would it take for you to get there in 3 gears instead of 4.

Depending on your engine, tires, and weight you want to cross the line at the top of 4th or 5th gear. For 5spd setups the gearing needs to be really short without killing the 60'.

well the whole reason i was asking is because when watching one of the speedfactory drag cars go by i only heard him shift twice if not once.

I had a 2 liter with a JDM ITR tranny (4.7 final drive) and it was almost too short for daily driving...I literally would leave a stop light in 1st, shift to 2nd as I cross the intersection, and into 3rd as Im leaving the intersection. Alot of shifting around town and I would frequently find myself in 4th and 5th gear doing 40 or 50 mph (city driving).
Highway kinda sucked cause Id be almost hitting vtec at 80mph in 5th gear.
I since have swapped in a LS 5th gear which helped alot on the highway.

Ive gotten used to it and now just accept it as if I wanna be faster than the next guy, a shorter geared tranny is my friend. Of course traction is also an issue. Id say go for the shorter geared tranny. Most people Ive come across with short geared (ITR/B16)trannies love them...My .02
