Default Honda Idle Problems

I have a 1994 honda accord ex that wont stay at idle. It will surge from about 500rpms to roughly 1500rpms. just wondering if anyone has/had that problem. are there screws i can adjust or what i have to do to fix this problem. i tryed cleaning the idle air control valve but that didn't do anything. Then also i was wondering what kind of cheep add on's i can put on.

Is it throwing any codes - is the check engine light on?

You can try a seafoam treatment. Also, is the valvetrain noisy - if so, then adjust the valves.

There is no idle screw that I know of.

I would adjust the FITV wax ball and clean out the IACV.

You could also try to replace the throttle position sensor (TPS). I had the same problem with my 90 CRX and when I replaced the TPS it fixed it.

Yes there is, but don't mess with it UNLESS you have to (ex- if the actual set idle needed adjusting, which it does not here).

Both of these posts are on the money. These three things are the most common cause of a "hunting" idle.

A word of advice though, just replacing the TPS won't fix the problem. Most of the time, the TPS itself is fine, however it might not be properly adjusted on the throttle body. This results in improper voltages being sent to the ECU and various idle issues.

You can find the method to adjusting it all over HT and the rest of the internet.

Following pics show you how to clean the IACV. It's for Integra, but my 96 EX's IACV is at exactly the same location. 15 minutes job. You spend more time in soaking it in cleaning solution. Ok, 1 hour, including waiting for it to dry. My EX had rough idle before cleaning.
