95 hatch with a h22a4: Lacks a little up top
Just picked up a 95 hatch with a h22a4 using the h trans. I have a few questions, maybe you will be able to point me in the right direction. The motor is running on a p28 ecu, the guy I bought it off said the h base maps were flashed onto it, and vtec was lowered to around 4500. I am pretty good mechanically, so I always check compression, plugs ect when I get a car.. The compression looked good 200psi on all 4, but the plugs look alittle tan, so hot/lean, and the car seems to lack alittle uptop, maybe I expect too much, but I don't really notice vtec engagement, and the car feels alot stronger down low..
I know vtec works off oil pressure, car speed, and set rpm engagement, so I checked oil, and wiring, everything seems good...
Lookin at the h22, seems like all timing functions are controlled by the computer? Anyone running a timing control of some sort? I know this motor is stock internally, and it shouldn't be hard to get it dialed in, I'm am goin to hook up my lc1, and see what the deal is with the afr, maybe I'll see something there, but if anyone can offer a reason for the car to feel weak uptop, and or how to check/set timing on a h22, that would help, I've seen a fee post mentioning the hole by the trans, on the front of the block, but I could find a reference mark for timing??
Thanks in advance!!

Well, it's an H series. It's torquey, which is probably what you're feeling. I haven't dealt with one but I'd assume they feel better in the low end than the high. Also, if you don't have a CEL, VTEC probably works. If it's all stock and you're not boosted, VTEC is nothing really special to hear.
Thanks Ron, sorry about that..
About the motor, I have rode around in a few b16/b18 cars that seemed alot stronger uptop when they hit vtec.. Guess I expected alot more.. I'll just keep lookin into it

^indeed. I had an h22 in a del sol, it was fun but yes, not much up top. Now I have a b16 in a CRX, not much bottom end but plenty up top.

huh.. okay.. thanks for the info guys.. guess I was looking for alittle more power than I ended up with.. O well..
as for the car, its seems to have a slight miss at the lower speeds, kinda like low speed high load, which is making me think that the ign. syst might be alittle weak, maybe something going bad.. plugs looked okay, but I will just change all the normal stuff, see what happens..
I did pop a code for something, lastnight, as I was "testing" it out.. right after I let off the gas, it popped on, so I will check that.. maybe an o2.. but who knows..
BTW.. great site, thanks for the quick reply.. and I will be on here alot more

get it on the dyno and get it tuned/see where your power is, who knows what map is on that p28, he might not of told you everything. your motor should pull pretty good to 7-7.5k, the h trans is a little sluggish though compared to a b trans
I am thinking the same thing krut..
cant say he would lie, but then again, cant trust anyone really??
I will find someone to tune it, and get some numbers, something to start with..

FIXED !!!!
Got under the car, and seen alittle oil, looked at the pressure sensor on the back of the block, and it was leakin, just alittle..
Fixed that, and WHOA.. whole different car.. LMAO..
