Who's builds the best Carbon fiber hood?
95 eg, looking for an oem style carbon fiber hood that i won't have to put hood pins in. Been trying to narrow it down, but when u call the dealers everyone of them seem to think their product is the best so no help there. I know alot of you have carbon fiber hoods, just curious as to who makes the best quality hood when it comes to the latch and the carbon itself. thanks
idc if they are, it'll cost me over 600 bucks to get a new oem hood and have it painted and blended to match my car. Its cheaper to get a carbon fiber hood, than to replace my hood that has massive hail damage on it. This is a tech forum not a general discussion, if you want to argue about looks, theres a place in general forum for it. thnx
hondas are all 'played out'. get over it. if you own a honda you're not doing anything original, no matter who tells you that you are.
although i've never been impressed with any brand in particular, i've seen less problems with VIS. Seibon's molds must be junk because every one i've ever installed - from civics to G35s to Porsches - has been significantly skewed in one way or another. most of the time they're actually smaller than OEM, leaving ridiculous gaps around the perimeter of the hood.

This is an interesting question, I've done what I consider a good amount of research trying to discern the differences between the actual quality of the industry leaders. First and foremost, you have to take into consideration the process in which the company makes their hoods. most of the companies use fiberglass and then lay carbon fiber over top of it. Some use honeycomb reinforced centers, others use roving mat. I have always taken very closely to heart that old saying that you get what you pay for, and in these situations, you're paying a couple hundred bucks for a cheap CF hood. I have had problems with VIS carbon fiber hoods turning yellow over time. That's just because UV radiation breaks down the molecular structure of the resin. It can be fixed by sanding it and clear coating it with a UV resistant clear coat. Anyway, the point is that any manufacturer like VIS, Seibon, Bmagic, NRG, and Carbon creations are in it to make money off of the industry it's all made in china or whatever anyway. They're all going to have latches. And fit like crap. If you want a flawless fit and finish, you need to look into the real JDM stuff.

So the goal is to save money not having to repaint the hood, and to avoid hood pins?

I certainly wouldn't trust a cheap CF hood to not need additional pins.

Pretty impressive product that you can mash it in a ball and it will lay flat again and mold the shape with a little heat.
FYI I have a Seibon and dont have any issues with it cosmetically or with the areo catches holding it down
I think i might go with the carbonworx hood of the spoon website, prices is comparable and looks like a much better product. Yeah i don't want hood pins, but i dont' ever drive over 80 so hopefully it won't come loose. Its just the current hood i have has bad hail damage all over it, so i a vinyl skin still wouldn't work to well. Thanks for all your help guys. Oh and yes i'd love the spoon hood, but if i'm gonna drop 1400 bucks on something it'll be to start working on a turbo kit lol

basically what he said. 99% of the companies mentioned use fiber glass with a CF layer and it's in no way, shape or form pure, true carbon. If you're looking for fitment and quality you have to go with the JAPANESE companies who use real carbon. VARIS,VOLTEX,FIRST MOLDING,MAX RACING,LITTLE BE, spoon (manufactured by varis) J'S racing (manufactured by Voltex) M&M and the list goes on.
I'm going to have to disagree about the spoon hood. I had one for a 92-95 civic and it fit worse than the VIS hood. It had blemishes everywhere in the carbon and the clear coat job was terrible. And this was an authentic Spoon hood $1000 without shipping.
you're a few months late there buddy.
^^
Yeah, I found this thread searching for pics of the "Evolution" carbon fiber hood and had to comment. I think people hype up brands that they've never even had experience with and it pisses me off.
Why would you help these companies get richer if you have no real idea or experience with their products, customer service, work focus, etc.

Hondas are not played out....... people with no imagination that just bolt stuff on are played out
There is a big difference between someone who builds a car that has an imagination versus someone who builds one by simply bolting stuff that other people have on. That is not directed towards anyone, just saying there are always little things you can think of that not many have done. It's kind of like drawing when you build a car....or it should be. Anyone can draw a stickman, but the details will make it stand out amongst others.
Good info on that CF hood also Eyger!

how does a new hood with paint cost 600? a oem hood only cost about 275 and i dont think someone will charge 300 to paint a hood correctly.
i have a seibon cf hood and love it. it has fiberglass reinforcement on the underside like im sure they all do. very light weight, we have it fastened by dzus fasteners on the race car, and its still sturdo and we even cut most of the fiberglass reinforcement out of it on the underside.

i had seibon hood and it did have major gaps all around it and was shorter in front.
cf hoods are not outplayed.
the carbon fiber wrap is outplayed
satin black car wrap is outplayed
jdm gathers radios that cant be used in US are outplayed... etc
cf hood is lighter than stock you can cover it with vinyl or paint it to match rest of the car.
you cant make your OEM hood lighter no matter how much carbon FLUBBER you stick on it.
never had VIS hood but definitely not getting seibon anymore.
although seibon did last 4 years without a single spot but it was always clean and waxed although it was always parked outside...
now on a side note id love to see some aluminum hoods for hondas.
we swapped a 350z OEM hood for CF hood and OEM turned out to be lighter than CF hood.
