I was looking into buying an 01 civic, but i've been looking around and have been hearing about people having a lot of transmissions problems with this gen.

My bosss has an automatic and he had to fix his twice already.

I was wondering if the manuals were reliable or just as bad and typically how long it would last?

 

the problems i have seen with the manual trans 01-05 have generally been just diff bearing noises sometimes i fix em sometimes customer gets a new trans depending on on their wallet and how heavy it is.

a few i have seen with syncro problems but not many this was normally on your beat to death car with a fart can on the back of it.

all and all as long as the clutch is good they are fairly solid transmissions

 

I agree. The biggest problem does seem to be the bearings, specifically the input shaft bearing.

Although the part itself is inexpensive, the shop fees to replace it are not. It's best to replace it yourself, if you have the time and know-how.


The automatic transmissions certainly leave a lot to be desired. They are notorious for premature failure and all-around problematic. Some people get lucky and pass 100k miles without any major problems, but it's pretty rare. The manuals are a lot more reliable, depending on how well you maintain it and also your driving habits.

I'm at just over 103.5k on the original (manual) transmission and original clutch. Although I do need to replace the clutch soon, it still shifts smooth and doesn't grind.
