97 prelude electric gremlin start problems
my first post here, so I'll start with the electric hell I'm in.
bought my 97 prelude with 200k on it {muahahahahahha}, with stereo problems at first. Front speakers and tweeters didnt and still dont work.
Removed front speakers, rewired speakers and tweeters to crossovers {didn't solder anything into wiring harness yet...}, and swapped out head unit. sound improved, but still no fronts.
Around this time, the car apparently developed starter issues, or at least what I thought were starter issues. I used to turn wrenches, and went through it all. No idea why the car wouldn't start, for months. Turn the key, no click click telling me new starter, no noise of any kind actually, just some interior dash lights and no ignition....
So... it really got awful yesterday, when the alternator loom tape started unravelling. Not really sure what tape to use, so wrapped electric tape around the wire. Not sure if this tape thing made it worse or whatever, the car would always pull this no start crap on a random schedule before. But, as I went to leave my work shop, car wouldn't start. again. repeatedly for a long while. I finally got the idea that taking out the head unit might help.... AND IT DID! Every time I tried starting the filthy beast without head unit it turned right over and even locked in a good idle for once, its been know to shoot up to 1200 or barely idle at 100.
So.... what gives? I know there is an ignition switch recall that affects this car. I know the battery is older. The car has 200+k now, might be on the orig alternator and starter. Where do I start?
arrrggghh

34 views and no responses. iskool..... apparently since it was hot outside the day in question, and to my memory every day i've had this issue, the main fuel relay in the interior fuse box locks out above 100 degrees IN THE CABIN.
i've been told to replace, and apparently its already had the ignition switch recall done. that knocks out those prob areas, all thats left is the orig starter and alt, gonna test that. again. later. will probably end up scrapping the starter. it started all day today though, much cooler outside with or without head unit. all day. I think i have a winner

no prelude keychain in the parts window....no chrome prelude license plate....i feel abandoned. in many ways
