Default d16z6 tranny on a d16y7 motor?

I have a 97 civic coupe 5-speed and was wondering if i could put the d16z6 si tranny on my d16y7 motor cause i need a new transmission and was wondering which would be the safer route to go. or should i just stick with the reg. tranny? what differences would it make?

The Z6 will work fine. I would go with it because the gears are shorter.

would i have to do any more (upgrades) or install anything else to make it work or just take the old one off and put the new on. and would the d16z6 si tranny be better tranny than a d16y8 one, which im guessing so but just wondering.

Nothing else needs to be done. Simply remove the Y7 tranny and install the Z6 tranny.

Z6 and Y8 trannys are pretty similar, they have almost identical gearing and mount exactly the same, the only real difference is the Z6 uses aluminum shift forks, the Y7/Y8s use steel forks.

dont wana jack threads but what iff the d16y7 is hydrolic clutch and the si tranny is a cable clutch, would you need a different clutch?

Depends on what year the Si tranny is out of. If its an '88 then yes, if its an '89 - '91 you can use a hydro clutch (in either case you'll need a cable throwout bearing though) Note that if this transmission is going into a '92 - '00 Civic, stop, its just absolutely not worth it. D-series hydro trannys are dirt cheap, for what mounts and a hydro to cable conversion cost you'll be way further ahead buying a hydro tranny. If its going into an '88 - '91 Civic then carry on.

I'm swapping out my S40 from my y7 also. And I'm replacing it with a S20. I think its a z6. And i was told the same thing too, just take off the old transmission and put in the newer(used) transmission.

Same deal, remove old tranny, install new tranny, fill with fluid. Done.
