Default Laid off!

Ugh these ****ers hired me for 4 weeks to build these oil skimmers then "didnt have as much work as they anticipated" all while I had an interview for another job that would have probably been more long term. Sad part is I was one of the few people that that could TIG everyone else just knew had to MIG. Since I was new I was at the bottom of the totem pole. So fustrating.....

yeah getting laid off sucks, i got chop last year, i had worked there for 5 years so they gave me 2 week severance pay....... and then a month later they brought me back, it was like i took a month long vacation and got paid for half of it!!! well that really probably didnt help in any was so maybe this will........ good luck with finding a new job sir, these are tough times.

If you take a risk on a higher paying, possibly less stable job, be prepared. Always see if they can agree to some working contract. If you *need* to maintain cashflow - such in the case of not having unemployment benifits - you may want to go with the lesser but more stable job. Sucks it happened to you though.

Yea apparently they were anticipating more boats to be built for BP but they cant find any oil anymore so BP cancelled everything. I was unaware of all this when they hired me, I didnt know it was just for a work overload for a month as the manager told me "We don't like to hire people and lay them off right away" when he hired me, which is exactly what they did

Sorry to hear you got laid off. I thought welders are in demand right now since there will be a lot of welders retiring?

I think that was a marketing phrase to get people to go to welding school and stuff, because I sure as hell dont see these abundance of jobs lol

It happens man. Might be hiring out here in the next few months. It's kind of like 1st grade welding in a super fast paced production environment. Its a good company to work for though.

I was in the same boat a few years back. Got hired in August welding large stainless vessels for ethanol production, was laid off from october to december, and then again in May. They said they would call me to let me know what was up and I even checked in with them on a biweekly basis.

Got a call from one of the guys I worked with and was told to start looking for another job. Unprofessional on their part if you ask me. Though I'm glad it happened because I'm back in school after realizing I don't want to be like all the lifers that were there and that welding is best as a hobby for me.

That was EXACTLY what happened to me. Weld for a couple years. Get laid off. Go to school because "welders are high in demand". Graduate. Spend the next three years bouncing from job to job because there were always lay offs.

Oh well. Such is life and the welding industry.
