Default Cracked Block?

Bought a CRX maybe 3 weeks back. It's an 88 Si, the motor was rebuilt and the guys we bought it from had their own shop. But today I took it out to get washed and on the way back the temp gauge went way up. Got it home and could hear bubbling. I had noticed before I left when I started it that the exhaust was producing not smoke really but more like when hot air off an oven moves through cold air. Only I had just started it up and its 100+ outside. Could that be coolant leaking into the exhaust? If I have to get a new block I saw some civic's with motors still in them at the scrap yard when I went to get a steering wheel. Do all the 1.6's say Honda 16 valve on them in the 88-91 or only Si models? Or does it matter what d16 block I get?
