3rd gear issue broke my Civic Si
Hi guys im new to the forums. I found it while looking for information about the 3rd gear issues in my 07 civic si.
So mine had been a little sluggish going into gear from time to time, but never anything to terrible until about 4 days ago when i was in 3rd gear and accelerating on the freeway and it completely popped out of place with a loud grind and then into neutral completely redlining my RPM's where i heard a loud knock. Well everything seemed fine after that. Until yesterday I began to hear a steady thumping as I drove that dissapeared when I pushed the clutch and shifted.
I got it to the Honda Dealer here in Houston, and they just called me saying that since it redlined at 9600 RPM's that probably caused something in the tranny to break, and thus it would not be covered under warranty...
My point to them is that It never would have done that if the damn thing didnt jump out of gear on me.
Does anyone have any advice or experience with dealing with a situation like this that can help me justify them fixing this obvious Honda problem under warranty?

also OP, have you had any work done for the third gear issue yet? if so, you can use that toward your case showing past problems with third gear. they will fight and make any excuse possible to not pay for the repairs. it is always an uphill battle fighting dealerships over warranty issues. it will take persistence on your part and demand to speak with the manager. if need be you may have to threaten to get a lawyer and take it to court. every situation is different though. hope this helps, and good luck.
right, the rev limiter works by cutting the fuel supply. so with it in third gear and accelerating, the engine has a large amount resistance and and larger amount of force turning it. so, when it popped out of gear it instantly has no resistance and therefore instantly revs up. the momentum of the pistons kept the rpms increasing for a few seconds even after the fuel is cut at 8200 rpm. anyone feel free to correct any innacuracies.

I've held my foot to the floor and was smacking the rev limiter and pushed the clutch in to shift to the next higher gear while my foot was still to the floor and it just kept smacking the rev limiter.

I've wondered this for a while, with different applications though.
once the force from the ignition of the air/fuel is removed, you only have resistive forces left (air being compressed in motor, friction between moving parts, etc). there's no way for the motor to keep revving with the ignition cut, unless you downshift, in which case the momentum of the car would force the rpm to rise.
Somewhat true. But you can still mechanically over-rev the engine which even the rev limiter won't be able to stop. Happens mostly in improper downshifting/mis-shifting situations.
