5th gen tranny vs. 6th. Same gear ratio? If not, which is better?
So, we've all seen my terrible thread and how I learned my bearing is bad. I'm picking up a 1992 tranny with 92xxx miles supposedly this Friday. I know all D trannys are essentially the same but are the gear ratios different? what do I lose or gain moving to a 5th gen?
I have a 2000 Ex Y8 5spd.
I have a 2000 Ex Y8 5spd.
Also, I plan on replacing the clutch kit. I'd buy for a '92 tranny right? And I'm N/A and plan to stay N/A so just stay OEM?
Clutches for d-series hydro transmissions are all the same. As for the gearing, it depends on what car and engine it came from. Cars with the y8 and the z6 have more or less the same gearing, though del sol si's and civic si's have the shorter 5th. Everything thing else has different gearing. 5th gen transmissions that are not from the z6 also have smaller bearings in various places throughout the transmission.
^It's coming from a '92 Z6 (pretty sure) into an '00 Y8. So I won't see any noticable changes to me?
I'm assuming it's an ex tranny too but he has yet to clarify. Is it that bad if it's a dx 5spd? I've heard they aren't built as well and would have different ratios.

^ haha, well it's a Z6 tranny, he confirmed. So getting this tranny, a new OEM clutch kit from Exedy and an OEM throw out bearing with two quarts of HMTF, my swap is looking at about $320. Not too shabby =]
Now, obviously it will match mechanically but will it match electronically? It's a 5spd so there's no planetary gears and computer crap to worry about. Just a few sensors that'll pop right in correct? Brake light, VSS and such?

Backup light switch is identical, VSS is physically different, but the plug is the same and it works the same, basically you just can't use an OBD2 VSS in an OBD1 tranny and vice versa because of a mounting issue. OBD2 VSS's are 1 piece all plastic, OBD1 are 2 piece plastic and metal.
Damnit! If I rigged it to stay for an amount of time until I got the VSS, would it work though? Cause I have to fix this and then take it on a trip.
Actually it's not bad if auto and manu VSS's are the same because I can just pick one up at the graveyard I live by for cheap. They don't have any manuals, so an auto would have to work.
Normally when you buy a used transmission they still have the VSS attached. I've never tried using an OBD2 VSS in an OBD1 tranny to check fitment. I'm almost postive the wont just interchange though.
Yeah, I don't see why they wouldn't just unclip the VSS instead of unbolting it. But would an auto OBD1 VSS work just the same if it's worst case scenario?
