Default discussion on ex tranny vs y7 tranny

A friend of mine says that his z6 tranny or w.e vtec tranny he has along with his vtec d16 vtec motor he would shift a 35mph and 65mph and 110mph ....when in my d16y7 i would shift like around 40, 70 and 110 also...isnt vtec gears suppose to be short...guys hit me up with the mph where you shift into the next gear in vtec sohc as well as non vtec because i dont wanna waste money investing into an ex tranny if its just going to decrease by that much.

Also note that there are different trannys for the y7 hatch and y7 coupe. The coupe has a shorter final drive

d16y8(Civic ex Tranny) gear ratios:
1st: 3.25
2nd: 1.91
3rd: 1.25
4th: .91
5th: .70

d16y7(Civic dx Tranny) gear ratios:
1st: 3.25
2nd: 1.78
3rd: 1.17
4th: .91
5th: .70

The Y8/Z6 tranny will in everyway be better than a Y7.. shorter gears mean faster acceleration.. just bc you would shift a 35mph doesnt mean it will slow you down ..and so on.. ive read many threads about the Y7 vs Y8 and some ppl say its night and day ..

B16a2(Civic si Tranny) gear ratios:
1st: 3.23
2nd: 2.11
3rd: 1.46
4th: 1.11
5th: .85

i wanted to add the Si gear ratios for some kind of comparsion

the gear ratios are correct, but the final drive isnt included so here they are.... cx/vx is 3.75 lx/dx is 4.02 and ex/si at 4.25. with a few exceptions between hatchs/coupes/sedans. but you can see the diff.

o...well i have an ek dx hb and my gearing is pretty like dude but...im pretty sure anyone with my car knows what im talking about...so you would recommend a z6 or y8 tranny...i kinda like the long gearing for top end speeds but man ever time i shift gears its like a kill. is when i race sumone in my category and then shift to third gear im still like pulling on them in second but still ineed to get rid of this tranny...but i also here than shorter gears die top end

Shorter gears die top end ?..........
No BIG NO
They have nothign to do with your powerband. Your still going to get 140+ MPH out of a Y8/Z6 tranny's gearing providing you have enough power, which is a death wish in a civic.

That is not correct. I have an HX which has wide *** gears, and I have never lost a race to an EX. We stay pretty even until the EX has to shift earlier.

my mph was different from your friends.

my 95 ex and 96 ex=
1st----35mph
2nd---60mph
3rd----90mph
4th----120mph
5th----unknown

my 95 dx=
1st----35mph
2nd----70mph
3rd----110mph
4th & 5th--- just got mad and stopped accelerating because it was too slow

does make a big difference between ex/si and dx/cx/vx acceleration is faster with 92-00 ex/si.

----------
difference between z6/y8 is the z6 has an allumnum piece and the y8 has a metal piece (forgot what it was but others know what i'm talking about.
but i perfer the z6 because to me, its a smoother shift than the y8

the thing is that i was told by a ppl in a performance shop that they wished they had long gearing like my y7 hb tranny...they say that a short tranny on boost will have no traction while a long geared tranny on boost will go on forever and push u back throughout the whole bandwidth...they also have a point i guess...im not going ot be riding around with slicks...and they told me thats how the big boys do it, they dont run the 1/4 mile throuwing gears they at most have like 3 gears.

Whats not correct? shorter gears always mean faster acceleration .. you car weighs in at 2400lbs w/ 115hp .. an ex weighs in at 2500lbs w/ 127hp .. which means if your a good driver and the driver of the ex sucks then yea you win ..

the only difference between the Y8 & Z6 trannys are the Y8 has steel shift forks and the Z6 has aluminum ..

This is true. The Y8 shift forks are stronger and they have a higher modulus of elasticity. (They will deform at a higher stress than the aluminum).

Y8/Z6 tranny is a night and day difference between the DX. I dropped almost a full second off of my 1/4 E.T. when I got an EX tranny. I have an EX tranny now, and it's great. There's really no argument here, EX tranny > DX tranny.

thats like big hype on HT .. "longer geared trannys are better for boost" are they? i dont think so .. .. a longer geared tranny(Y7) will help with traction but overall itll still be slower than a shorter geared (Y8) tranny .. my vote get a Y8 tranny .. and sell the Y7 tranny to them guys at the "performance shop"

Have you ever been in a turbo car? Obviously not or you would know that wider gears are more desirable than short gears. You sir, I believe are the "f-ing moron".

Someone else in favor of long gears...he has a point...i was in my friends supra the other day with super long gears and it was awesome...it feels like while the other guy next to u is switching gears ur still pulling on him in that same gear...for example ...i raced my boy in a 2002 ex coupe rolling around 60 and we stayed even untill i shifted to 3rd, the car die evertime i switch because i dont have power, and then were both in 3rd evenly again and we he shift to 4th that im still in 3rd i pull on him...like all the way to like 118mph were he starts catching up cuz he has a vtec motor...and no he is not a bad driver...yea he hits things on the streets lol but he knows whats behind a race.

and the reason y i was asking about the top speed on a y8 tranny is because about 2 weeks ago my boy setup a big race....his 90' teggy on 10psi vs a 2002 or 03 i wasnt sure porsche carrera...they raced 2nd gear rolled...down in miami there a long strip of road so u can go as fast as u want...and he was 1/2 a car in front of him untill he hit 140mph which is his top speed and the porsche flew by him
