Default SMOKE AT HIGH RPM ?!?!?!?!?!?! Help

Ok basically when i get to about 8600rpm and plus there is little ploom of smoke when i change to the next gear.
my rev limit is something like 9200 or 9300 not to sure as i don't like to hang around at those revs. i guess i could just boot it at a stand still and check where it is but Come on thats a bit silly isn't it...i mean there may not be one lol.
It has a FEELS ECU and supossedly FEELS CAMS.
would i be right in thinking they may have run it a bit rich for safety.
Spoke to a couple of chaps at work one is an old timer and he said " is it one of them vtec things "
i said yehuh
he stated that Vtec engines practically run like an after burner on a tornado Gr-1 ( F-16 to you guys though )
so he says it it is literally just pumping as much fuel as it can get there and maybe if i upgrade the sparks and get new HT leads that it will spark a bit more and burn the unburnt fuel.

this smoke is very faint and looks clean...not black or grey like a kinda whitish smoke but not an obvious white.

CREAMY GREY we'll go with.
i will get it to the local tuner at the end of the month and get him to check diagnostics and maybe get it on the dyno to check how it is running.

i'm a bit gutted as i though its feels they know exactly what they are doing

Hmmmmmm
trials and tribulation.........thats why i bought a honda to only have the latter

Just a thought......maybe the piston rings are going bad.

How can i check the vavle stem seals ?????

its starting to smoke lower down the rev range now.
from idle i floor it and it starts to kick out a bit of smoke at about 8200 RPM plus.
It is using oil.......i've been topping it up a bit recently but it is not consistant. as in its not burning like 100ml every 100 miles it seems to differ.
also i have checked the back bumper after a drive and there are tiny little splats of black on it and if i rub them they come of and are oily.

9 out of 10 times with bad valve stem seals it smokes a little upon startup and it usually won't smoke after that it more than likely is your rings man

i'm sure the valve train is feels mate so i'm sure its not the valve stems.
no smoke on start up.
so will that be the oil rings then. it is only smoking at high rpm.
Am i looking at a rebuild for this ??
or just new piston rings ??
If its a rebuild i'm going K20a on this mother F*****
i've only had it less than 3 months.

cheers for your input though mate.

It dont matter what kinda head it is... Seals can still go bad. However in this case it does sound like the rings. You can pull the pugs and use a compression tester to see if you are low in any cylinders... Thats where Id start...

BTW:
What motor is this?
How many miles on it?
Has the bottom end been rebuilt?
If so How long ago?

for sure do a leak down and compression test to see if anything is going bad.

when my ringlands started cracking i would see faint smoke behind the car only if I got on it, it would be fine if i drove normally, but if I took off the oil cap there would be a good amount of smoke coming out of there.

if valve seals where bad it would smoke a bit when first turned on for the day since oil would be leaking on top of the pistons overnight.

yeah my wifes gsr was doing the same thing smoke on start up and and red line in between shifts I did a compression test and hole 1 and 4 were both 280 and hole 2 was like 190 and 3 was 185. what would cause the compression rings two inner ones to wear faster then the outer ones?

Now that these engine are 10+ years old, it becomes more common. The fix, new rings and valve seals...a basic rebuild

yeah man spot on its only when i rev hard and rev high up the rev range..
i see faint smoke behind the car. Also when i drive normally i get nothing in the way of smoke. when i take of the oil cap there is some smoke....
no smoke on start up....

i will do comp test and leak down soon as going away for next 3 days.

if i rev hard and then use light throttle the throttle is jerky only for about 2-3 minutes or so but then it is fine.

also don't know if this helps but if i go into Vtec and then let the car rev down from 7000rpm or higher the exhuast pops a bit.....
thanks for your help guys hoep what i have stated helps diagnose the problem a bit more.

New at Hondas, but in general, when (if you lift between shifts, doesn't the increased vacuum have the potential to suck oil in thru weak stem seals?
Check smoke during deceleration - if blue, could be stem seals/guides.

this is what my pistons looked like when I pulled em out, also my compression test came back in the 150 which isnt to healthy, but all the numbers where within limits of eachother.

As mentioned earlier, these engines are getting old...things wear/age....piston rings from use, because it's a high rpm engine, and valve seals, because they dry out as they get older, loosing their ability to seal properly....especially under load.....this is no secret

Compression tests don't dive all the answers, a leak down can provide even more

arrrrr man they don't look good.....

this is worrying me now... is there any chance this thing can blow up or something or is it a case of just getting it fixed to prevent further problems.

it will be a month before i get the money to do any work..... i am thinking of just leaving it and getting a K20a later on this year esspecially if this means a rebuild....

well in my case im boosting so it was probably getting worse faster, but the car was running, just not healthy. all the chunks where being held together by the cylinder walls and carbon build-up, probably why the compression was coming back in a decent range, just getting alot of blow-by. I was sick of looking like a mosquito fogger so I tore it down it to get it back to new again.
