I just bought 2 10" mtx subs and box as a package and im running a 600watt mtx amp to them and ive noticed that i am not getting a clean bass sound when the windows are up its almost sounds muted. When i open my windows it sounds alot more cleaner and crisper. Also, when i put my head up to the dash it sounds alot better too like the frequencies are concentrated there? The box is facing backward and is vented. I dont know if turning the box around or facing it upward would help but any input would be great. Thanks.

 

The reason it sounds louder on the dash is because the low (bass) frequency wave length is very long, Longer than your car. The dash is the furthest away from the woofers, which means the wave has had more time to "mature"

The reason your subs sound Muted is because they were made by MTX :-) i keed i keed
If you want a "cleaner" bass, Youre gonna need a box that is either tuned differently or sealed.

Kinda sounds like you have one of the speakers out of phase. Disconnect one speaker and see if your bass returns. If it does plug the second woofer in but connect the wires up opposite to the way you had them.

 

no, lots of cars sound louder with the windows open, cover your mouth and scream, then don't cover it. your car is tight and makes the subs work harder to compress air, do you know what it's tuned to?

 

oh, if they are out of phase just watch them, you will see one pulling and the other hitting differently

 

Alright Ill watch the subs and make sure their hitting together. I bought the subs in the box already so i hope they didnt mess the wireing up, the box only has one set of posts to hook it up so im assuming their set up in mono. The car is a 99 SiR. If i were to make a new box would i need it to be smaller or bigger and this box is vented as in just has a big slot would it help if it was ported or sealed?

You analogy is not the same because your ears are outside your mouth. If your ear was in your mouth there would be no difference.

For your car it depends on the set up and shape of your car. You may or may not get an increase in SPL from rolling your windows down.

Pull one speaker and flip the wires around. The bass will either improve or get worse it's very easy to tell the difference.
