Default is this head blown!?

Hey, I have a 91 Su with d16 vtec engine in it and recently timing jumped and the Damn valves were smashed. I am buying a "rebuilt" head and I was wonering if there were many ways. To tell if. It had any problems before buying it then swapping and crankng. BTW he said it still has heat tab... but can't u just put a new one onif the other one melts? Lol. Thanks

The phrase 'blown head' usually means headgasket. It's not very often you 'blow' a head.

I'd make sure that the valves seat correctly i guess. Check for scoring on the cams, check for warpage... That's all the advice i can give sorry.

Here's a quick trick to tell if the valve seats are sealing:

Clean off the combustion chambers as best as you can. Take the head (with manifolds off) and spray brake cleaner into the ports with the head on it's side making sure the corresponding valves are in their closed position. Look at the corresponding valves and see if they are leaking. If they are dry, you have a good seal. If they get a little damp, you're so so but still functional. If they are damp and the brake fluid is spreading you have a slight sealing issue that needs to be addressed. If the fluid just pours out, that cylinder will have very low or even zero compression.

Also inspect for deck straightness with an engineering/machinist straight edge if possible.
