popping coilover springs
hey just lowered my car more recently by adjusting the sleeves and when i first turn my wheel to the left it will make a popping noise in my left driver side as well. same thing when i back up. after the first time and driving iwont hear it until i pull out of my driveway again. what should i do? i thought coilover springs since they dont have a set way to sit on the perch shouldnt make any noise?
if you don't have struts, the springs can be sitting and rattling, also once you lower the car, other things are stressed etc etc
check all bushings, control arms, etc,
get struts/shocks if you don't have.

Check the axle. My old car did this, tuned out the cv was completly destroyed.
It's the spring, I'm almost 100% sure. I just lowered the coilvers (tein basics) about three or four threads not even an inch. I'm certain it cant be the bushings as I have poly all around lol.
my question is that how common is it to have coilover springs that are flat to make popping noises as if they are not indexed correctly? The strand thing is that it will only make the noise on the first turn and when im backing up. It does not constantly make it. I will hear a pop and thats it even if I continue backing. thanks

What car is this on?
Op What kind of car?

ya i just put blox comp 12/10kg on my 92 hatch and my fronts dont pop but when i go up a drive way at an angle it always pops right rear is worse than left rear dont know what causes this my rear trailing arms bushings are worn dont know if thats the problem but they were worn b4 coilovers were put on so i dont think its that. the springs on them are wound tightly and flat on top and bottom the coils may just be rolling over each other where the coils lay on each other im glad tiens are doing this too cause i only payed 570 for my set up.......... if i figure anything out ill holla at ya

to fix the popping noise, should i raise the car up by both wheels in the front and try to move the spring around? It is very loose when the wheels are off the ground. (Tein said this was normal and ive seen it in other peoples cars) I really had no problems with this before I decided to go lower. It's not a big dela, it's just a small quiet pop/knock and then it goes away until the next day when i back out/drive forward into my driveway.
all other times theres no noise whatsoever.

Strut cars with coilovers will have popping noises. I have noticed 3 types of pops on mine, when turning, the spring will move and cause a pop, the lock collar for mounting base to shock is not tight enough, when reversing up hill the wierd pressures make horrible popping.
The first is caused by the top mount/bearing not turning freely causing the spring to rotate instead. It can be bandaid fixed by a thrust bearing under the spring. This allows the spring to rotate on the bearing. You can find them at Summit Racing.

It is constant maintence to keep it working. It will need to dissambled and cleaned every month and each time it rains or it will not turn freely and the popping returns.
The second won't apply to Tein basics. On Double ajustable coilvers the height adjusting lock has to very very tight. Use a hammer on the wrench tight.
The third I havent been able to resolve

i tried jacking the car up and just rotating the spring around as the wheel is off the ground. the top hat is pretty loose just like the spring is- its probably what is causing the popping sound. It's not a big deal though, like I said it only happens when I reverse out of a full stop as im turning the wheel. It sounds definitely like a clunk. Any ideas what else it could be if it doesnt make noise at all under normal driving/turning? i checked the wheel and the ball joint/tie rod seems to be tight and it aint bushings since mine are poly and theres no noise when going over bumps. maybe its the front sway bar?
could also be the sleve if its a sleve type coil over. try finding fat rubber orings that will fit over the strut body and act as a cusion for the sleve and the srut. some sleve coil overs come with these.
whats exactly popping the front sus or rear ...... off topic , when you tell some one a problem with your car more info would be nice what model year set up and what you did always gets us on the right track quicker... my sus pops in the rear only and what i noticed is that my cars so rigid now and tight with my blox coils that the sus lifts slightly and the spring stays with the top mount and when my car comes back down it hits the lower perch where the spring should rest causing a popping ...... give us more info on your car and see if we cant help
for no popping, find the sleeves that go over the springs. and to the other comment, not exaclty having no struts but having crap struts.
yet it is possible to just run skunk2 springs on no struts, not the smartest idea tho obviously.

the popping could be a combo of things also, varying from the strut, bottoming out, to the springs jiggling, or the CV joints / axles popping cuase they are stressed.
This happened on my car too. i'm pretty sure if your using sleeves your not using the orings on the strut that normally comes with your sleeve set up. The orings keep the sleeve from moving around and on top of that the springs your using is trying to be sitting in its natural state meaning if you go up your drive way or angle a certain way, its like you said when the car is off the ground the springs become very loose and wobbling every where it needs to sit in its natural state. What you would need to do is purchase a some what large washer not sure what its called but its like the size of your top hats to put on top of your springs. sorry for the run on sentence =] hope this helps
