So i'm thinking of tackling the timing belt... a few questions:


1. the DIY im reading calls for removing engine mounts and jacking up the motor, is this necessary and why?

2. DIY i'm reading also calls for removing the valve cover but nothing else on the top end, why?

3. will this take me more than a day?

4. any common snags i should know about aside from the crank pulley bolt?

i suggest you have a look at the car...


2) i assume the valve cover has to come off due to it overlapping the timing chain cover?

 

1. you have to remove the engine mount and loosen the valve cover to remove the plastic cover to expose the timing belt.
2. itll take a couple of hours maybe even longer if you have abs cuz the module just happens to be right in the way and make everything tighter and harder to get to.
3. make sure you know what your doing. ive seen friends screw timing up on their engines and they have bent valves as a result

also do i need to replace the rubber gasket for the timing cover? probably, eh?

 

no you dont have to replace it but if you want to then go ahead. i didnt. it just keeps the dirt and debris from ruining the timing belt. its not like a valve cover gasket

 

the timing covers on these cars especially the lower cover usually has 1 part of the timing cover crack or a piece comes clean off, i dunno why this happens but 3 out of 5 t-belt jobs i have done on this car had the piece break off. and jdmhondaes1 has a point about the abs module being in the way. it can make it a real PITA to get to the bottom bolt on the upper timing cover and harder to disconnect the CMP sensor. good luck!

anyway to move that ABS module?

 

it really doesnt matter if your careful or not. the timing covers on these cars are notorious for have one of the lower bolts rust in the threads so you have no choice but to put enough torque on the bolt and break the plastic cover. its no big deal. it really does happen a lot. it happened to me too... and NO way to move the abs module
