Default Think I'm going to replace the IACV

Now the questions are, where to get one and which one to get?

Looking at autopartswarehouse I see 2 different ones (don't pay attention to the FITV in there).

Aside form the price, what's the difference? Might the cheaper one be shoddy and not work properly? Any other ideas, aside from cleaning it?

Been there, done that. At this point it's a band aid fix, and it doesn't work completely. I have used brake cleaner, 3M throttle body cleaner, seafoam, on and on. I think I want to just replace the damn thing.

Do you have an IACV CEL code? Have you ruled out a bad IACV wire? Have you ruled out other possible causes for a bad idle?

I have never had a CEL in this car, but it does work, so no. Bad wire has not been ruled out and I'm not really sure how to test this. Can you help there? As for other causes.... I sprayed just about everything under the hood with brake cleaner to no avail, after trying to find precise leaks with a propane torch. Any other ideas? I just cleaned out the IACV again and it didn't do a thing. Every time I have done this in the past it has solved the problem to one degree or another, but it always made a significant difference.

High, fluctuating, or low idle?

What year/engine?

The idle drops for just a moment repeatedly. The wife said that yesterday it actually stalled. It has started now to sputter when first accelerating.

Thanks

Only when the engine is fully warm? Only when cold? All times?

Only when fully warm. I replaced the FITV last fall since part of it had actually broken off, and the high idle I had went away.

EDIT
Also the car has always seemed to drive crappy when the weather is cold (i.e. rough idle and rough at cruising speeds).

What condition are the plugs, wires, cap, and rotor?

If those are fine, I'd recommend that you replace the PCV valve, clean out the PCV and breather hoses, and then adjust the idle speed:

I'll go get a PCV valve right now and report back.

Thanks again

Well I'll be dipped in ****! I took the PCV valve out and it was covered in grease and grime. So I replaced it, took the hose out and blew it out with brake cleaner and cleaned the surrounding barbs and such.... and it idles fine. I am in a bit of a rush right now as I'm going out of town tomorrow so I didn't have time to jack up the car and get underneath the manifold so that will have to wait until Monday.
Isn't there a breather box of some kind buried under there? Should I tinker with that? Is there some standard protocol for cleaning it? And how the hell do you get at it?

The plugs could probably be replaced. The wires seem to be solid. The cap and rotor were off about a month ago and looked fine.

Thanks for the sound advice and for forcing me to live by the principles espoused by you signature.

I'll report back once I have had more time to get into this.
