Default D16 Y5

Hey!! I'm new to honda tech but i've heard this is the place to go for honda info and i have a huge problem and need your help. The other night i was on my way home driving my civic HX and all of a sudden boom car jerks and my oil light comes on....o crap. i pulled right over and shut it off got out and found that every last drop of oil was underneath my car.....i blew a rod right threw the side of the block. i got it towed home and now i need a motor. i can't seem to find another d16y5 but i what i need to know is could i just use any d16 block and just swap the head and be ok? or does anyone have a d16y5 that they'd like to sell to me??!! its a 1997 civic hx d16y5 vtec. i just want the stock motor, this car is what gets me to school and work so i need to fix it asap. Please help!! thanks!!

just drop a d16y8 in it and run the y8 ecu. lots more power too, but you won't notice it with the hx tranny. or u can just run a d16y7 and swap in the y7 non vtec computer.

Is your car automatic or manual?

An automatic HX will be more difficult to swap than a manual HX since the automatic transmission for these cars is actually a CVT (continuously variable transmission).

Basically your problem there is if you had a different engine and a different ECU you wouldn't have the correct ECU to run the auto transmission.

If it's a manual transmission vehicle I'm pretty sure you could put a D16Y7 or D16Y8 into the car fairly easily.

Btw:
D16Y5 - HX - 1.6L SOHC VTEC-E (115 hp / 104 lb-ft)
D16Y7 - CX/DX/LX/VP - 1.6L SOHC non-VTEC (106 hp / 103 lb-ft)
D16Y8 - EX - 1.6L SOHC VTEC (127 hp / 107 lb-ft)

So if you swap in a Y8 instead you'll have a little more oomph. Plus the EX transmission has short gearing, which will give you a little more push too.

Sorry, I don't know much about head swaps and such, especially in regards to the HX. Perhaps this will help at least as a bump.

Awesome man thanks. it's a 5 speed, n i was talkin to a few of my buddies that are into hondas and they were sayin to swap a Y8 into it. i actually went and picked up a D15B2 for $25 bucks with an auto tranny....couldn't pass it up it was a steal lol. And from what I've heard from some friends i can take the 1.6 head and put it on the 1.5 block.....they called it a mini me swap? I've never heard of it but i guess it has a higher compression ratio and gives me a little more umph. I'm not really lookin for more power tho my civic is just my daily driver that gets me around and is awesome on gas. I'm more into nissans....my toy is a 93 S13 240sx with a SR20 blacktop....but i still love my hondas lol.
