Default wtf is this thing on my block?

hey i had the motor out of my car and I was lookin at it and noticed like 4 big 19mm plugs. I took one out and found a buncha metal shavings (motor was toasted, no big deal) but..

wtf is this plug thing and what purpose does it serve?

looks like a cleanout for the cooling system. kinda odd.

replies make sense, thanks for the shouts. yeh the motor is toasted, so don't worry about the metal shavings. I doubt they'd be in there if the motor was still good.

on the front side near the transmission right..? that's where the block heater accessory is installed for colder climates. it replaces that plug and has a wire that you plug in to a standard wall outlet for power.

only reason i know is because i bought a motor that had one installed. no one needs a block heater in SC.. haha.

yeh a block heater, that's the kind of complex answer i was lookin for. a cleanout for the cooling system is too boring and uneventful.

thanks for the shout.

its a core plug. it where they get the material out when they cast it. the block heater is made to go in it. just like other core plugs/freeze plugs.
