EG Spare tire Box.. Need Opinions
My Boss use to be into SPL about 6 years ago. He was telling me he had a 92 Hatch. He used the entire spare tire as the box. he said he took some rubber seals and bonded them to the top of the spare tire area. Then just took a 3/4 piece of plywood and mounted it on the seals and bolted it down and used that as his box.
JW how well this would work it seems like a good idea in my head but just curious on how it would perform in a more SQ aspect rather than his situation in SPL.

MDF would be better then plywood.
A sheet metal box, [even with a plywood baffle] is not going to sound very good, the rubber "seal" would isolate the baffle and maybe get you an airtight seal, but it would also mean the baffle would not be solid and it would resonate at a different frequency then the box, [spare tire well], SQ would definitely be an issue.
If you want to use the tire well as a sub cabinet, fiberglass and MDF are your friends.
Sub cabinets are volume specific to the sub(s) you want to use, just putting a sub into a box is not going to get you the best performance from the sub.
For good SQ, SPL and a low F3 point, [low bass] a box must be the proper size, [net internal volume] it must be airtight, [except at the port on vented boxes obviously] the box must be well constructed with proper bracing, [so it is solid]. 94
