Default smell under deceleration, but no visible smoking

I have a 2000 integra gsr with 136,xxx miles. all stock motor with i/h/e. it seems like for months ive been noticing my car having a burnt smell while im driving around with my windows down.

only recently i noticed its only under declereation while in gear. only thing thats weird is that i see no smoke under accel, decel, idle, heck i barely get that tiny little greyish clearish puff around vtec.

motor was compression tested in Nov 09 and came back 210 on all cylinders. valve seals were replaced in Feb this year. car is my DD and i rarely get into vtec (maybe 2-4 times a week)

anybody? :/

How's your clutch, is it slipping? How do your spark plugs look? There are many different types of "burnt smell" a car can make and each slightly different smelling, so to try and diagnose something that subjective over the internet is pretty difficult.

the clutch doesnt slip but i think the input shaft bearing is going. making a "bird chirp/squeak" noise when clutch pedal is out. goes away when pedal is pressed.

sorry i forgot to mention that. could that be the clutch smell? it kinda smells like a burnt clutch but i figured that if it smelled under decel it would smell all the time

Burnt clutch smells a little like burnt brakes, not an oily, or coolant type burning smell. Try taking your car out on the road and shift it into a high gear at low RPM and flooring it. Watch your RRM's and see if they increase over the speed of the car and that will tell you if the clutch is slipping. A weak clutch can slip on deceleration but won't necessarilly slip all the time unless it's under load.

yes, and if it's really that small you'd never notice it while the car was moving or probably even stopped with the hood down.

hm. thing that gets me is the effing clutch was "replaced" in dec 09. but that same place also gave me a nice little dent in my passenger rear quarter panel because their mechs were fooling around and one pushed another into the car.

so needless to say i dont trust the work they did.
