Tranny rebuild rehash
Hi from up in Canadia, eh.
I just picked up a B16 swapped '91 sedan a couple of weeks ago and it's in need of a transmission rebuild. I'm figuring I'll order a rebuild kit from Synchrotech and have a go at doing the work myself. I've got a set of feeler gauges and some good torque wrenches. I'm sure if I take my time, and follow the manual, I should be up and running again in no time...
Of course, there's more. So: this tranny grinds third, fourth, and fifth; if you've really been giving it. It's also a little on the noisy side (though no real ISB noise, strangely). On top of this, if you want to shift down into second while moving, you need to be going slowly enough that the road speed in second matches the engine's idle speed (95% of the time). Now this tranny isn't complete junk, you can row through the gears grind-free if you're slow and gentle. Here's the question: If the tranny has been ridden hard for too long and the dog teeth are gone, will simply replacing them suffice? Will I also have to replace the syncro sleeve if the dog teeth are gone?
Thanks for the help guys!

The engagement "Dog Teeth" are part of each gear so If the engagement teeth are worn on the gears the the gears must be replaced along with the synchros and sleeves. Usually the synchro wears first, then the sleeve, then the engagement teeth on the gear. You will need to open the transmission and inspect the parts to see exactly what is needed. You can PM me with pictures of the parts and I can help you with what will need to be replaced.
