The other day I took my car out for a drive without using the AC since I was just testing something that I had just fixed, and it started to smell like bad egg's coming from the AC Vents. I remember seeing a thread on here about this a while back but I cant seem to find it. How do I fix this? because I cant drive with the windows down at all now (even though I wont really since its summer now) because the car smells like bad egg **** the whole time im driving.

 

sounds like your cabin air filter needs replacing.

 

I forget what year Jimster's Civic is(Although I "think" he has a 6th gen IIRC)but I didn't think any Civic from 92-00 came with a Cabin filter? Or am I wrong?

 

you might be right. i work at Kragen and was searching for a cabin filter for my civic. nothing was showing up. I thought we just didn't carry it. Makes sense now that you mention it. I just figured that it would be a staple in every vehicle.

 

yea its a 97 EX Coupe. I looked it up and there is no part # for a cabin air filter.

 

Jim, check and make sure the drain hose is still connected to the nipple on the bottom of your Evaporator. You should be able to jack the car up, slide under the passenger side and see if its still connected. There is not a clamp that holds the hose onto the nipple on the Evaporator so it could have slid off which will dump water into the carpet and foam and could get moldy causing a smell.

Just a thought, if its really humid where you are you could go drive for a bit with the A/C on and then stop and see if you have water dripping out of the Evap. drain hose, that would also let you know if its hooked up.

 

It SHOULD be that's for damned sure. There is a post floating around here where a guy retro-fitted a CR-V cabin filter into a Civic. I know I have to clean leaves/debris out of my blower motor every so often but I am gonna come up with a way to put something over the fresh air door under the windshield cowling to keep debris from ever making it in. Big stuff gets stuck in the blower motor, smaller things can get blown out and into your A/C Evaporator which could eventually block it enough to keep a good amount of air flow over the coils which would greatly hinder the performance of your A/C System.

Also, there are aerosol cleaners available at your local parts stores that are specific for cleaning the HVAC system. You will have to follow the instructions on the can, but you just spray the contents into the cowl vent under the hood/wipers with the A/C on and it kills mold and freshens the system.

 

USDM 5th/6th gen civics do not have cabin filters unless one added the bracket and all themselves.

Check evaporator hoses and for leakage like said ^^^

 

yea I already checked that. Its still connected and working properly.

 

Rotten egg smell is caused by sulfuric acid which is found in batteries! You might want to check your battery. Also, check your condensor. Take it to your local car wash and pressure wash it to the best of your abilities. Sometimes crud and mildew build-up can cause this issue. I hope this helps...

 

you car just have alot of gas....... Check for leaks, is water getting inside your car?

 

You beat me to it! Because I figured out what it was yesterday, I just haven't had time to update this thread. My voltage regulator in my alternator blew out and gave the battery 17.5 constant volts. Which blew one of the cells in the battery open. So I had to go get a new battery, but I just went to interstate and got a refurb one for $32. And then went to this independent alternator re-builder and got a rebuilt alternator for $69.

 

Very interesting. If I ever have a rotten egg smell in my car I will know exactly where to start looking. Glad you got it figured out.
