Default EG/ SMOG Questions

Hey guys im new to HT and have couple questions regarding my car (iono if there has been a similar post or not, sorry if i ask questions that are on other posts imma noob)

ok guys so i recently purchased a honda civic eg hatch 92 vx model its my very first car that i purchased myself (im still in college, broke as hell) anyways the owner was a friend's friend. the ride is pretty much stocked with some jdm features and a new engine swap from an ek. everything is good about the car but before i can file the paper work i need to get it passed smog which the guy never told me that he hasn't smog it since he first bought it n did the engine swap. right now my 10 day grace period is almost up and i cant register it because i cant smog it. he told me i need to smog it illegally because the engine is different and he took out some signals and that he did something to the ecu so the car is faster. im basically it a spot where i either find a way to get smog done or let the car sit there n rot WTF FML. I know some of u would say y didnt u ask about the smog before purchase...i ASSUMED he freaking did the smog before hand n i was told that "oh everything is fine blah blah blah..." fail give me some advice guys im desperate. tell me what i can do, time is running out!!!! i dont want my first car to just sit there n rot

well, what motor do you have in there?
d16y8, y5 or y7?
do you even have a catalytic convertor?
any engine light?
u probably need to get the stock ecu in order to pass emission because the car may be running rich with that modified ecu

Simple. Fix what needs to be fixed and smog it. Or don't and let it sit. If you're in CA you'd need to bring that to the smog ref since it's using a newer engine. If you know where to get a "magic" smog then do so, if you don't then oh well. Either way, it's going to cost you money.

You should look into the laws regarding the sale of a vehicle in your state. You may be able to get your money back if it is the SELLER's responsibility to take care of smog for the buyer.

I thought that was the buyer's problem in CA? So I heard and swear I've read.

i called DMV awhile ago the guy how answered told me that the seller should have done smog prior and that sometimes its common that the buyer has to get it smog if the seller doesn't do it.

Taken directly from: http://www.dmv.ca.gov/vr/smogfaq.htm#BM2537

The seller is required to provide the buyer with a valid smog inspection certification at the time of the sale or transfer. Smog certifications are good for 90 days from the date of issuance.

The inspection is not required on a transfer if a biennial smog certification was submitted to DMV within 90 days prior to the vehicle transfer date (a vehicle inspection report may be required for proof of certification).

NOTE: Smog certifications are not required for transfers that occur for a gasoline powered motor vehicle that is four or less model years old. (Determine the oldest-qualifying year model by subtracting three from the current year) the four or less model years old rule does not apply to diesel powered vehicles. A smog transfer fee will be collected from the new owner.

r3nG - No one is going to be able to give you a rough estimate until you know exactly what you have and what has or has not been modified. Even then, you still can't account for faulty sensors or a bad cat. Those things unfortunately will never really fully reveal themselves until you actually run a test.

$10 says the seller didn't smog it cause you will have to jump through hoops to get the car smog legal. I ran into this problem when buying my hatch. People will do mods to the car that aren't smoggable and try selling it off once they have had their fun. But the way it sounds. it should be ok. before smog, your gonna need to get it REF'd though. Since it has a OBD2a engine on a OBD1 chassis. Then they will send you to a smog station. Hope its not TEST only, cause if it fails thats just more money on you to figure out why it didn't pass. If you take it to a smog check place, they can tell you what is wrong and what needs to be fixed, and most places allow free retests (check to make sure).

Looks like you just need to open your wallet and hope for the best at this point.

You have to go to the smog ref to get a sticker put on the engine bay that says the engine/chassis combo is legal in CA. They'll check the emissions equipment, cat, Ex. manifold, muffler, air intake, block VIN (although I've heard not all do). All that stuff, make sure its all legit. Reffing is free and done by the state BAR, usually at community colleges. You have to call the BAR and schedule an appointment. They'll tell you where to go.
