Changing the auto trans fluid on my '98 EX & '99 VP Q's
I didn't see any write ups on the auto transmission in the FAQ sticky.
Few Q's:
*Do I have the same trannies in both cars?
*What ATF is recommended & how many quarts for each car?
*is it a drain & fill procedure like the manual trannies or does a pan need to be dropped or something lime that? Anything I need to look out for??

all i know is that it has to be filled in the dipstick hole
and MAY have a drain bolt under it im not sure
and HONDA ATF works for any honda auto transmission

statement two: yes. The drain bolt is on the bottom of the trans on the passenger side of the trans. Use a 3/8" ratchet to remove the drain bolt. (no size, just the ratchet)
statement three: NO. A CVT, which is an automatic transmission, takes CVT fluid, not Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF).
If it is a CVT trans (which came in the HX coupe) it will have a tag on the transmission fluid dipstick advising to use only Honda CVT fluid. As for all 4 & 5 speed Honda automatic transmissions, yes, Honda ATF is the best transmission fluid to use.
Ok I saw the 3/8" ratchet bolt ur talkin about when I was changing the oil. Now does the EX & VP have the same trannies? How many quarts should I get for each? & only Honda ATF is recommended? No Amsoil, Royal Purple, or Redline stuff??
I personally won't put anything other than Honda ATF in my Honda autos. Yes, a 99 Civic EX A/T & a 99 Civic DX-V (VP) both get ATF. It's about 2.7-2.9 quarts for ATF change. So you'll need 6 quarts total. Don't get the transmission flushed at any shop no matter what they tell you. Honda strongly advises NOT to flush their automatic transmissions.
Pull out the dipstick
Take out the drain bolt
Let it drain the same as you do for an oil change
Clean the "fuzz" off the magnet on the drain bolt
Replace the crush washer on the bolt
Put the drain bolt back in
Put in 2.5 quarts and check the level
Keep adding until it reaches the low mark (bottom of the lXXXXl section)
Put the dipstick back in
Warm the car up to temp and drive it around the block
Turn the car off
Check the level within 90 seconds of turning off the engine
Add fluid as/if needed to reach the full mark (top of lXXXXl section)
Repeat with the second vehicle.
Side note: a long slender funnel or funnel with a flexible hose will make the filling/adding ATF part a lot easier.

takes 3.5 quarts to fill it. thier is no pan to drop. i know when i flushed mine i jacked the car up on jack stands . took both tranny hoses off the radiator and put them in a bucket. turn the car on and put it in drive and let it pump out about 2 quarts. stopped it and refilled it through the dip stick and did the same step again to get another 2 quarts out.

Well according to Honda service manual it's 2.9 quarts for ATF. You went above & beyond a fluid change, that's probably why you needed more ATF than specified. Again, Honda does not recommend flushing the ATF on any of their automatic transmission vehicles. Also, Honda advises against using any ATF additives.
