Trying a new coolant, thoughts?
I have a certified mini / bmw tech thats a pretty close friend, and he offered me some "blue" coolant today and i was thinking about trying it. I normally run just the prestone 50/50 and be done but i was kindof curious to see the difference. This is a specially formulated coolant for bmw's.
Its not prediluded so i was going to ask and see if i should do a mix of 1 bottle this and another of just regular water.. whats your thoughts on trying this.
Its blue and he said it shouldn't be a problem, they usually do a 50/50 mix he said there's no difference, he said it does make the bmw's run a tad cooler then just using the regular ol green antifreeze..

I hope you're kidding cause my sarcasmometer is broken, do you know how much damage that does inside, plus the fact that water has a lower boiling point?
Allmotor, I don't see it being a problem, but I would add a bottle of redline water wetter or some other kind, I've used it with great results and people around here that do track sessions all run it with success, it lowers coolant temperatures.

i was just seeing if anyone has had any experience with trying another coolant.

According to my buddy that works at a Honda Dealership, Blue coolant is the same formula as the green, it just has a blue dye and is supposed to be a long life version of the green.
Coolant is coolant, they do the same the thing, lower freezing point and raise boiling point of water. However, pure distilled water will still cool better than coolant/water mix.

yea na i wasnt joking i never heard anything super bad about runing just water in the car i guess i learn something new every day my daily driver is that just a daily driver its all stock so i dont beat on it , but my teg will have a mix in it

you will be putting a water pump in there soon if you don't run some coolant mix in there.
I cant remember the name of it, but I used to have overheating issues with my LS/Vtec in my EF with a half size rad in it. I switched to a can of stuff from autozone It was a stright gylcol that you mix with water. no antifreeze properties just cooling so not for a car that will see winter use. I will swing by today and see if they still have it, I swithed to a full size to help me out and things have been much better since even on normal coolant
This is true but he should run a product like water wetter. Water wetter has all the additives regular coolant would have with out the ethylene glycol. Plus it has the possibility to lower coolant temps on an engine that is driven hard.
Distilled Water + water wetter is unlikely to cause electrolysis and corrode the inside of the water passages. This is what I run in my ITR.
Do not run tap water, if you do, run at least a 20-30% mix of coolant.
Tap water + water wetter will still have some corrosion issues over time.
I don't think you have too much to worry about in terms of coolant selection. Whatever you do, don't run GM Dex-Cool

i use the same blue coolant in my honda and have no issues...
i usually use a 1L bottle of undiluted Pentosin blue and water for the rest... distilled water if im feelin rich. hah
(it doesnt get below freezing often around here)

yea right now im running about a 30 mix of coolant into water. soon im going to drain completely and fill with distilled and add either water wetter or so other lubricant for the pump.
A. water is the best coolant but also highly corrosive.
B. The Coolant doesn't really matter!
C. this is like the 8th retarded thread i have seen in thirty seconds. all your cars are pieces of ****

I don't think you should be using tap water at all...from what I know minerals in tap water cause corrosion in your radiator and eventually will make it give in. running some kind of Coolant would be good
Minerals also cause mineral/scale buildup which inhibits heat transfer.
I use Honda OEM coolant.
