Icon3 Hole drilled in block B18B1 for future LS/VTEC swap, can the hole be fixed?

Just got a B18B1 for real cheap, kid said he was planning to swap a VTEC head onto the block and had the hole drilled in the back of the block in preparation for this. I don't really know much about head swaps to add VTEC, but since it already had this hole in the back, I figured I might as well learn and finish the swap but after talking to some friends about my plans for the motor, I'm just going to leave it non-VTEC. However, I need to patch this hole. Is that possible, or am I screwed here? If a patch IS possible, is it going to leave the block too weak to handle much power? I don't have huge plans for this motor, I'd be happy getting it to the low to mid 200s for horsepower with just a little boost. I don't need the Civic to be a beast, I recently got an IROC that I'm planning to get big power with, the Civic is still going to be my DD but I'd like it to be a little quicker than it is with the stock D.

If repairing the hole isn't a good idea, does anyone else have a suggestion for what I should do with the motor - trade/sell?

Well a picture of the actuall hole would be nice for starters. And if he drilled the hole where I think he did I believe it can be repaired.

Yeah, I'll have the picture shortly, I used someone else's phone to take it because my phone takes horrible pictures and the phone isn't at the house anymore, sorry I didn't mention that. The kid said the swap had already been done, and it used to have a fitting but it had been removed...the head on there is an LS head too, so he may have been screwed too when he got it from his buddy, thinking it was already LS/VTEC but his friend probably took the VTEC head off it before trading it to him.

If it is where you think it is, is the repair economical? I don't want to spend more fixing this thing than I could spend to just get another motor elsewhere

If it had a fitting on there before it was most likley a NPT style of fitting which means that you can get a NPT plug in whatever size hole you have. There is a big difference between a VTEC and Non-VTEC head on the outside. That blows if someone passed that LS motor as a LS/VTEC.

Yeah, the kid didn't seem as if he knew much about the motor...either that or he was just trying to cheat me by trying to tell me it was LS/VTEC. I just ignored him, the head didn't say VTEC on it and most or all VTEC heads have a big ol stamp saying it, don't they? I've also seen that people use that particular spot to run an oil line to their turbo...could I do that instead of patching it?

The hole looks a little ragged, kinda worries me but I don't have much experience with engines so I can't estimate anything...here's the picture.

Eh, didn't put much out for it. Is this fixable or do I just need to find a new block?

Looks like the hole is from a broken rod to me. Not worth trying to fix, LS blocks go for ~100 bucks.

Hey dickface, I don't know motors all that well, I'm just getting into it and I didn't really look closely at this till today. As soon as I looked closely it was obvious it was a thrown rod. Everyone that wasn't an asshat, thanks for your input. I got my money back from the kid a couple hours ago, he's taking the motor back and I'll find a new one to work on when I have the time.

As for dickface, if you don't have anything useful to put forward, or at least a nicer way to say it, keep your ****in trap shut.

Yeah I realize I screwed up by trusting the kid instead of trusting my gut. Not much of a failure either, considering I got all of my money back and didn't lose anything from it. I really should have double checked to make sure before I handed over the cash, but I figured "hey, import solidarity right" and he was 100% honest about this piece of **** CRX he was selling, honest enough to where he was probably sure he had just blown the deal by telling me but he was still honest with me. I figured he'd be honest about this too. I know better now. Don't need some dipshit telling me I'm an idiot though, considering I knew the problem as soon as I looked closely at the hole in proper lighting. I just have a trust problem, I do it too easily. Won't happen again. Once again, for those who's input was actually useful and positive, thank you.
