'98 Civic with power steering, unless I'm missing something obvious it looks like the axle has to come out to remove the alternator? On my other '98 with no power steering you can maneuver it out, but for some reason on my PS car no matter what way I turn the alternator there's just no room to get it out. Is there a trick I'm not seeeing?

 

Had to pull the axle to get mine out, '96 with PS.

i'm going to look up the labor time for replacing the altinator. if its really high for an average altinator (about .8 hours) then it may require an axle removal...hang on guys

 

its 1.2 hours. hang on i'm looking at the removal part..

 

ok so i'm sure we can skip the duh stuff like he batt cable, radio code, and plugs...oh well we got that N-E-ways
remove the bolts...adjusting bolt and through bolt.....more posts coming

 

then the belt (another duh thing)....

 

then pul any remaining bolts holding the alternator in place.....you guys are stuck here huh? hang on....

 

if necessary, remove the mount bracket bolts, and the upper and lower mount brackets. then remove the alt. and replace it and adjust

 

and you know the rest
dont see anything unusual except maybe the bracket removal....does this help?

 

Removing the lower mount bracket is the key to success. This way the axle does not need to be removed.

 

I sure do appreciate all the responses! I've got the lower bracket out, I guess I just haven't hit that magic angle it needs to be at to get it to slide through.

 

Did you also remove the splash guard? In addition, you must have the front end on stands not on ramps.

 

I've got it on jack stands, but still have the splash guard in, it seems flexible enough I can pull it out of the way, I just keep getting hung up on the axle. The more I mess with it the more I think I'm going to have to pull the axle to get the new one in properly anyway. Getting the old one to fall out is one thing, getting the new one seated right and holding it in place while I get the lower bolt through it is another.Thank you for all the great info Ron!

 

I also could not get it out with the axle in the way, bracket removed too. Pulling the axle is no big deal.

It helps to remove the splash guard because the pathway that the alternator takes for removal is toward the driver's wheel, not straight down past the axle. You could also try turning the wheel right or left to maximize space for the alternator to slide out.
