I replaced the contact points in my starter and now when I got to turn the key over, it clicks and you can hear it spinning. But no start.

Ground wire on battery gets very hot.

 

Sounds like it's not lined up with the flywheel properly.

 

What's the proper procedure to get it lined up?

 

If you can hear the starter spinning, but the engine is not, then it's not engaging for some reason. I recall a similar problem a few years ago..

Remove the starter again, and hook it up to a battery just long enough to get the gear to extend. Then, when you reinstall it, line the teeth on the starter gear with the teeth on the flywheel.

 

I got the gear extended, reinstalled it back onto the car, amde sure all the grounds were tight and it fired right up.
