LSD = worth it?
I have a ~175whp lsvtec in an eg hatch that I plan to take to the track on nitto drag radials or street tires 2-3x times a year MAX.
I'm wondering if you guys think putting in a type R lsd is worth it since it will cost $500+ and is a big job? how much does just going from an open differential to a LSD get you in the quarter mile for a setup like mine?
hoping someone has done this before and can offer personal experience rather than guessing. I'm sure the lsd will help but that $500-700 could possibly put to work elsewhere so its cost vs. benefit trade off. I ask because I've seen plenty of 10 and 11 second turbo hondas on stock/open differentials and trannys.
thanks

i think you answered your own question when you said "plenty of 10-11 second hondas on open diffs". that's true. imo if your goal with the car is drag racing the sooner you boost it the happier you will be with time slips. then again if your lsv is built with a stock bottom end you will just hasten the death of that time bomb of a motor.
yeah, thats kind of what I was thinking. I race shifter karts so I'm not really trying to build my civic into a monster, just something fun to drive to work and may just join some buddies at the track occasionally.
I may spray a 50 shot on it but don't plan to go any futher than that, certainly no boost is in the picture for this car. Bottom end isn't stock but has pr3 cast pistons and stock LS rods. compression is way too high to boost on pump gas really though.
so sounds like you don't think a lsd is really worth it? I have a LS tranny in it now too if it matters (less wheelspin)

I have been thinking of going with an itr tranny but I spend a ton of time on the freeway and kind of like the LS tranny as a result.
you are totally right but I think with the LS tranny and a 50 shot, mid 13 second quarter mile times should not be unreasonable and that is the goal for this car.

if you know someone that can do internal work on transmissions you can always do that type r trans with a LS 5th, or even a b16 or gsr, but either way if you want more potential out of your car the LS trans aint helping

I don't know anyone who can do internal work cheaply on transmissions in norcal or I'd be down for sure. If I swap out the LS trans at some point I'll certainly put that LS fifth in whatever I go to.
anyone gone from open diff to a lsd or spool and seen noticable difference without any other changes?

you live in Nor Cal, anywhere near San Jose, because RNR does great work, worked on my trans for me and have rebuilt plenty of peoples transmissions and they're located in san jose, great prices too and great reputation
thanks turbo civic, what was EXACTLY the type of info I was looking for. awesome. so it seems like on my car on drag radials or street tires I'd probably gain .2 or so in the quarter mile (since I have alot less wheel spin than you).
thanks Duma, I'll have to look into RNR, i'm in SF so that is not too far away. If I do anything I'll probably just get an itr tranny and put the LS fifth in it so hope they don't charge much for that.
thanks everyone

About 5 years ago I drove my second integra. At the time, mine was a stock GSR, his was a mild comptech DC2 build. He had right about 175whp and a type r tranny swap. The car was soooo much better than mine that it started my persuit to where I'm at now (Built, Sleeved, boosted, 550whp). The main reason why the car was better was because of the gearing and more importantly the lsd. Cornering and traction were light years better than mine. Buy one, you wont regret it. My advice is get an MFactory LSD, they're high-nickel chromoly steel rated for 1,000whp. Not that you'll ever get to that power it's just much better and stronger than a type r one. It's $649 vs $500. As a side note, go to the track and you can find people with type r diffs that still do one wheel burnouts... Trust me it's worth the extra $150 if you decide to get one.

thats a good point about the M factory lsd. My second question was going to be how tough are the itr lsds but that answers that.....
goal of this car was to kick *** and get 40+ mpg so because of that and budget I'll keep the ls tranny for now even though its holding me back. I think with a 50 or 75 shot the gearing should be ok and help with wheel spin on street tires or nt555r.
just got a damn speeding ticket today too so that puts me back a month or so on my build cash....

Open diffs are for broke *** suckers, I broke 5 last season, started in the middle of the season. I feel like a rahtard for going though all that.
Mfactory FTW

i would do a gsr trans and put a Mfactory lsd in it, you would have a little shorter gears but still be able to drive it on the freeway, either that of a B16 trans with the same lsd, its worth the time and money
