compression ok, good dyno #'s , but buring oil
Hey everybody,
Heres what's going on with my Type R
Had compression test done at honda dealer.
Cylinders 1-4 160,165,165,160psi. test was performed by honda mech. and engine was cold. They told me that piston rings were good.
Just had car dyno'd today and it put down good baseline #'s (car has aem cai and skunk2 stage one cams w/ cam gears set at o) I have not had it tuned yet and just wanted to get a baseline.
She put down 163hp and 115ft lbs of torque on mustang dyno
The problem.....
She seems to burn alot of oil, but only when car is in vtec. Anybody else have similar experiences with their Type R? I don't really want to pay for a rebuild right now

Welcome to owning a type r. How many miles does it have? Iirc compression won't tell you the rings are fine. Do a complete leak down test.
^ agreed
also how much oil is the car actually burning? ie a quart every 500 miles? numbers like that will help in determining the health of the motor as well.

They did a leakdown as well as compression test, it was between 5-8% on all 4 cylinders.
The honda mech. said this was good
Not sure exactly how much oil it is burning. I do not daily drive it. I would guess 1qt every 1k miles or so

The car has 69k miles. It does not leak oil on ground.
I was told by honda mech. he could not inspect valve seal unless he pulled the head off the motor.
I am thinking that because it only smokes after vtec kicks in that it could be the valve seals once vtec engages and opens the valve more and keeps it open longer.
Maybe I just need the head rebuilt.
Please correct me if I am wrong!
Thanks for the advice

i think the majority of the ITRs out there probably belch a little smoke when it crosses vtec. and a quart every 1k miles doesn't seem too bad to me...
ive been reading in the ITR forum and many people say that this amount of oil consumption is pretty normal....

i dont like those compression numbers. i think they are scary low, or he wasnt holding the throttle plate open or something. true they are within the couple % of eachother, but the base numbers are just LOW. i would expect the number to be at least 200. sure every gauge is gonna be a little different, but i still think its low, or not done right.
same goes with the whp numbers. but i havent ran anything on a mustang dyno before?
i think anything more than a quart every oil change (>5000) is probably too much.

Compression rings can be in good shape, but the oil rings may be shot.
Valve seals are a fairly easy fix if you can live with the down-time.
If you are mechanically inclined, remove the cylinder head, take it to a machine shop and have them do a light surfacing (~0.002") and buy new valve seals from Honda (~$1.50/ea). You should be able to get that all done for less than $200, including the machine shop labor, headgasket, and misc parts.
After that, if you still have an oil consumption problem, it is a sure-bet that your oil rings are gone.

Talked to acura mech. today, He thinks it is probably the oil rings that are bad. Bummer, looks like it will cost about 2-3k to have rings replaced.
Thanks for all the responses.

WHAT??? 2-3 thousand??? you can buy a HOUSE with that kind of money..haha
..but really if i was you, i would do my homework and replace the rings myself. really its not that hard and and will cost you WAY LESS!!! i did pistons and rings on my gsr for less then $900 and all the parts were OEM but if you have the money for a tech go ahead. GL with you ITR
