Icon2 whats wrong? vtech not engaging...

ok i just recently bought my 99 si in sept. of 2009. i live in the midwest so yeah...it snows big time up here. well , when i bought the car, at that time was not snowing yet..now that the snows all gone, i took my car out for a drive my vtech is not engaging at all. car was running preety good bfore. also my speedometer is not working. not really a car nut so dont really know whats going on here. ?????? also there is a knocking/ clicking/ rattling noise thats coming from my tranny everytime the clutch is about to engage in gear...usually 1st and 2nd gear...a buddy told me it was a bearing or pinion in my tranny...idk didnt hear him correctly..i think he said something pinion..can anyone give me advice or help me solve my problems? thanks!!

Might want to check your VSS. If it's bad VTEC won't engage. That could explain your lack of speedometer too. As far as noise in your tranny? Could be tons of things. Kind of hard to figure out over the internet.

You could be hearing the gear inside the trans that drives the speed sensor making a noise because it is loose or it could be bearings making the loise.

just a stab in the dark...was the engine warmed up before you try engaging vtec? And like smileycvc said check the vehicle speed sensor. Also check if you have enough oil too.

yeah, a buddy told me it mite be the speed sensor...as for the VTECH problem, i checked my oil level is good, and i warmmed up the car enough i think...but still not kicking...but heres the deal, i recently purchased set of headers along with aftermarket catylac converter, and i forgot to make sure first bfore buying so i accidently bought an integra b18 header...yes it all fits...but somehow its leaving me 2-3 inches short from my mid-pipe. so i am running open catylac rite now...loud as hell...and i think is running rich..again not a car nut so dont really know much here. can " running open catylac" cause my vtech and speedo not to work? because bfore, my car still ran good and strong for its model. thanks, Kao EM1!!

You have an aftermarket header, its a 99 engine, so you should have two o2 sensors on the header. One towards the top, and the other just before the flange for the exhaust piping.

As for the VSS, if that does work, vtec wont work...the speedo problem is directly related to the vtec problem, solve the speedo, and i bet you've solved the vtec.

Thats assuming you have two o2's, knock, iab sensors all intact and un damaged.

WE HAVE A WINNER!!

Vtec will not engage under many (but not all) Check Engine Light situations. If the CEL is on, that 99.9999% surely the reason your vtec is not engaging.

Take it to Autozone and borrow their OBD2 scanner. Plug it in and read the codes. They will tell you what's wrong. Post the codes here.

If you're throwing codes for primary O2 sensor and Vehicle Speed Sensor, those are 2 reasons your vtec is not working, although it should still work under a secondary O2 code.

As mentioned before, if the vss is not working properly, your vtec will not engage.
