Hey guys,

So I need to replace the rear brakes on my car (90,000 miles on factory rear brakes FTW!). I am torn between going all out on factory Honda stuff (since I know it lasted a long time) or maybe going a little bit cheaper with aftermarket brand stuff?

Do any of you have any experience with less expensive aftermarket stuff and the longevity of it?

I am probably going to run Hawk HPS pads (cheap for me cause I sell them) or another premium pad with a slightly more value oriented rotor. I know that the back brakes don't do a lot so I would think the rotors should hold up fine. I have Hawk pads with Powerslots on the FRONT ($75 per rotor!) but the pads are outlasting the rotors (warped) by far so I am thinking I should not spend $50 a piece on rear rotors anyway?

Any advice or input or personal experience would be great!

As a quick comparison... The Hawk pads are only $35 my cost, and a normal premium quality pad is like $15 (Wagner, Beck Arnley, Monroe... the good stuff). REALLY cheap pads run me like $8 (house brand stuff). Ha ha.

And the rotors are anywhere around $20 a piece for the value stuff and around $50 a piece for premium aftermarket or factory Honda stuff.

 

I have ran the Hawk HPS pads on my 99 EM1 and loved them. Great quality pads. EBC makes good pads as well.

 

hard to go wrong with hawk pads...stock style rotors are fine...

 

I know the Hawk pads are amazing. I have them on the front... My question is regarding running them with cheaper rotors.

 

I will pass on advice from my HPDE instructor.

Your powerslot rotors will crack from heat at the end of the slot because it goes to the end of the rotor. So I would stay away from these. Maybe okay for street, but def. not HPDE or autoX. He says that he has seen some powerslot rotors break apart under extreme conditions.

He said brembo blanks and hawk pads are you best bet!

 

I have done some autox with the Powerslots and haven't had any issues with them cracking. But as I said before... They are really warped. Ha ha. So I plan to just go with Brembo blanks on the front whenever I change them out. I figure if they are going to possibly warp anyway then I might as well spend less money each time!

I have seen my fair share of cracked rotors that were cross drilled though!

Thanks for the advice. I will probably just run the Hawk pads with a cheaper rotor and see what happens.

 

stay with stock parts cant go wrong with them. unless you are upgrading to better aftermarket then its fine but not if your going to buy cheap aftermarket

 

Ha ha, except "better" aftermarket hasn't really been any "better". I guess that is my fault though. Not Hondas.
