Icon6 To Boost, Or Not To Boost?

Hello. I have recently got into the Honda arena. I am a gearhead, but have only owned stangs in the past. I just bought a 97 Accord with a F22B2. (no V-tec) My question= Is it worth boosting a sohc engine even though it is not a v-tec, or should I do a motor swap. I am sure you have heard this before, but I kinda need some advice. Thanks alot.

The F22 is a great engine to start with for a turbo build. VTEC doesn't matter. I prefer the non-VTEC engines for boost and the VTEC engines for NA.

What are your HP goals?

If you're not going to Boost it, throw an H in there and build N/A if that's your forte, but YES, the F22 is DEFINITELY a set up that does VERY well with boost from what i've seen. You should plot Hp goals so people can effectively aid and advise you.

I just kinda want an everyday driver. Not a track car, but something to get me where I am going fast. HP goal= about 275 maybe 300. I would also like to keep it dependable. I am just curious if by boosting it, if I would have to be replacing head gaskets all of the time or different internals. Thanks so much Andy and Wavy. It may take me a while to respond. Going on vacation. Also what brand of turbo and what psi should I go. Also is there anything that I need to change out to make it more dependable and safer to boost besides adding an intercooler and blow off valve? Like plugs ect.

I first turbo'd my F22A1 in my 1991 Honda Accord about 5 years ago. At first I was running only 7psi with a 1G DSM 14B turbo and an FMU. Then upgraded to a chipped P28 tuned with Uberdata, with decent tuning done by a friend of mine, no professional. 5 years later... I am now running a T3/T4 turbo, on 10.75psi. NO motor work has been done. All I did was replace the head gasket when I first turbo'd it 5 years ago, and still running with that same head gasket. When I first put the T3/T4 on, I was doing about 15psi, on most days (manual boost controller sometimes had a mind of its own, therefore my F22 has seen 19psi numerous times). On the 15psi I put down 256.1whp, surprisingly to me, my tq was 256.1 as well, both running parallel to eachother the entire run. Anyway, what I'm trying to say is that the F22, with its cast-iron block and sleeves, and its 8.8:1 compression, is PERFECT for a turbo setup. But any motor needs the usual TLC, I have failed to up-keep my motor for the past about 2 years, therefore is slowly on its way downhill. Now I am looking at actually building an F22.

The f series have cast iron sleeves which is why the f22b2 handles boost extremely well. Completey stock, you can boost and run up to 12psi without blowing anything but I wouldnt pushi it. But erring on the side of caution I would change the injectors and take preventative measures to ensure your engine doesnt blow. For a DD I would recommend running no more than 8psi on the stock engine. I have never heard of anyone having problems with their f22b2 boosted with 8psi stock. Even with pushing it. And a T3/T4 hybrid would put you in, or close to, the HP range you are looking for. Remember though. Your accord (CD5) is relatively light compared to your previously owned mustangs. Its a four banger instead of a V6 or V8. Vtec is more gear towards NA as stated earlier. It doesnt affect the turbo setup.
