Default 98 ek hatch problems

alrite just switched from dsms to honda, i got a 98 ek h22 hatch. its was sputtering for the majority of this week. I changed the spark plugs and wires and at this time wasnt throwing any cel light. so today i went out and got a new distributor cap and rotor hoping that was it, so i replaced them and went head and cleaned out my tb. now im throwing a light and the car will start and then die instantly, i can get it started and it will idle just fine but when i give it some gas it will rev to about 3k and just completly **** out and you can see black smoke coming out the exhaust. did i **** something up or is something wrong, can i get some feedback plz?

Check the plug wires and make sure they are connected to the distributor cap in the correct order.

Head over to a parts store, buy or get a loaner code reader, save the receipt and return it after you pull the code(s).

I might be able to help you. My 97 civic with h22a OBD1 had the exact same problem I think? When we first did the swap the car would start up and idle great but as soon as you touched the gas it would die. It was the IACV. Can't remember the code. I assume your car is a 1998. What year is motor and is it obd1 or obd2? If it's obd2 96 and newer I can't help you. Mine is a 1992-1995 obd1.

I would first find the error code from ECU b4 u waste any time. You don't need any scan tool though. look for a 2-wire connector under glove-box dash near the ECU. Bend a paper clip into the shape of a "u" and insert into both sides of the plug to make a connection. Turn ignition key to "on" position. Check engine light will flash (stay on long) for multiples of 10 and flash short (stay on short) for 1. In other words a code 13 would be one long flash followed by 3 short flashes. Code 26 would be two long flashes followed by six short flashes. You can look for a code list on the forum or I might be able to find mine somewhere?
My IACV was ok but I used a OBD1 to OBD2 JDM conversion harness that is pinned wrong unless you originally have a "VTEC" civic (EX or SI). I had to move some pins to get the car to run right.
