what would happen with no ign. wire on alarm?
So my friend got a used viper 791 alarm for his civic. He wants me to help him put it in but I realized he is missing some things. Everything he is missing is remote start related which he is not using anyway so not too big of a deal but the ignition wire for the alarm was on the remote start ribbon harness which he does not have so no plug either.
So can we still hook up the alarm without the ignition wire? I've installed a few alarms but I don't know a whole lot about them and how they work. Will the alarm still function without this wire? I would assume so since it's not on the main harness or anything but who knows. What exactly would happen if we put a the alarm in with no ignition wire?

Anyone? We are going to put this alarm in today but we won't be able to hook up the ignition wire due to not having the plug. Will my friend still be able to use the alarm until we can track down a plug off a used alarm? What will happen by not hooking up the ignition wire? It's a simple install with no keyless entry, starter kill, remote start or anything so I'm hoping it won't make a big difference.
Is it brand new or used?
You will only need the ignition wire if you are installing the remote start feature. Your alarm module should have a red wire to be soldered for power supply from your constant +12voltage.

It was used. We took it out of a wrecked car and it had everything except the remote start ribbon harness and the heavy guage remote start satelite harness. I didn't think the ignition wire was needed either but I had been told by alot of people the alarm needs a ignition wire for even just the basic functions work, but yet no one told me exactly why. I know ignition wires are pretty much standard on all alarms but I'm not sure of their exact function.
So anyway, we hooked up the alarm today but didn't plug the brain in to test because we were still unsure about the ignition wire at the time. Here is what wires we all hooked up.
Main harness
-constant 12v (red)
-siren + (brown)
-ground (black)
-trunk pin (blue)
-door pins (green)
-parking lights (white)
And then we hooked up the grey wire off some small remote start harness, only remote start harness that we did have, to run to the hood pin under the hood. That's it for the wiring. All the alarm has besides those wires is a siren, shock sensor, led light, valet button, antenna.
That is all the alarm consists off. So can he get away with no igntion wire? I guess it would be great if someone could tell me exactly what the purpose of a igntion wire would be. I did alot of searching but couldn't find any answers on exactly what the ignition wire on a alarm did and why it was needed. Everything just said to hook it up, not why I needed it hooked up.

send me a pm and I will send you a plug for the ignition part of the alarm. Without the ignition wire the alarm control of the auto unlock will not work, you can not program the alarm, and you can not reset the alarm and the led will stay on all the time.
Thanks for the offer but we were able to come up with the plug yesterday. We also got a DEI mini siren and a DEI battery backup to add to the alarm. I have a few questions about those though since Ive never installed them before.
