Default Car is burning coolant, overheating.

Okay so the coolant problem existed from a couple months ago where I only have to fill up every 1-2 months, but I was getting 32-36mpg so I didn't really had a issue with it. Now, on my cluster it tells me that my car is overheating when I'm idling but drives a bit higher than normal on the freeway. I then notice that only happens when the coolant reservoir is empty which is now every other day. I cannot find any external leaks or dripping and that I did a tune-up 30k ago where I replace my water pump because it broke. Also, I am getting 32-mpg now and my check engine light went on and stutters a little as I drive it normally. What might be my problem?

Oh I also found out that even when my car is warmed up, there is still clear white smoke (like steam) coming out of my exhaust.

X4 head gasket. Hopefully you have'nt scored the cylinders, or cracked the head with all your overheating.

Hhhmmm, I see... That can explain my check engine light also. It goes on and off at times. Is changing the head gasket easy?

If you are mechanically inclined then yes, it's a very straight forward easy job.

I would grab a Chilton manual so you know all the lbs specs for bolts and things of that nature.

I have D16y8. Also, if it is straight forward then I can do it. The only problem is that I need to find a place to work on my car. So I have to hold out for now.
