Default automatic problem

i have a 96 honda civic 4dr and my problem is in order to start the car i have to push the shifter up til the 'P" is illuminated on the instrument panel. What causes this< how can i fix it>. i tried to search but couldnt find the right terms to describe the problem. any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I believe there is an adjustment available by the shifter,, take off your center console and see where the cable shifts.... then you should be able to figure it out. Or,,,,, there might be an adjustment needed where the shift cable meets the trans..

Thats right. There is an adjustment you can meke to the gear selector switch on the shifter. It basicly slides back and forth a bit for adjustment.
