I am wondering what the heck is wrong with a friend of mines CRX Si. It's a 1991 CRX,stock motor, doesn't have too many mods, just a Greddy exhaust and a KN drop in filter. The noise it is making sounds like a grinding (high whine) of some sort from the front of the car, and it feels like the clutch is slipping. When you decelerate, or let off the gas, a sort of grinding sounds or high pitched hum comes from the front. I thought it might be the flywheel( clutch and pressure plate) or the throw-out bearing might be going bad. The transmission is very easy to shift and goes into gear with no problem, so I have eliminated the tranny problems or synchros as a possible cause. Has anyone else had this problem or heard of it? Any advice or info would be greatly appreciated before I go tearing into his car. I did his tranny oil change a few months ago, and i used Honda MTF and did it correctly.... I would just like to know before I volunteer my time to take off his tranny... Thanks in advance to knowledgable posts...

My friends eclipse actually was doing that. When he would downshift to slow down, its make, well the sound of a bad bearing. Kind of a hum, he thought it was the throwout bearing, turned out it was some other bearing in the tranny. I don't know if this is of any help....anyways, D16 cable trannys are cheap, cheaper than rebuilding one im sure.
dunno.. when i down shift or have back pressure@high rpms, my car rattles also. I cant think of what it could be though. eventually something will break if theres a problem. -one way of looking at it

I don't want it to get that bad..this high hum and grinding noise is really annoying on the road, and I don't wanna see my friend stranded...

Input shaft bearing...otherwise (not completely sure) known as the pilot bearing.....did he have a recsent clutch job done?? If so the flywheel needed to or needs to get resurfaced and get a new bearing on there......

He has not had any tranny work done, but I will help him drop his tranny and replace his flywheel and clutch if neccesary, and take care of that bearing... if that is really the problem... thank you for your input..
