lucas 80w 90 gear oil for a d16z6??
i know there are numerous threads about gear oil, but i got a very
simple question, i'm changing my tranny tomarrow night and want to
know if the lucas 80w 90 is a good or bad idea...it's 6.99 a qt
so it's cheap plus lucas is known to be a name to trust, thanks!!

thanks everyone, but pennzoil syncromesh is for gm/chrysler i hear...also honda mtf isn't available near where
i live, and the closest honda dealer is a 20 minute drive, and considering i'm walking that's outta my range lol. I'm just
goin to get the 75w-90 valvoline from autozone
last question, how many qts would i need to buy?

75w90 is WAY too thick.
Before Honda designed their own manual transmission oil, they used regular 10w30 (last page of the '92 Civic Owners Manual says 10w40 is fine too).
Of course, this is before the developed their own MTF, which is the best oil to use because it is DESIGNED for thier transmissions ('96 Civic Owners Manual states that 10w30 or 10w40 should only be used an a short term substitute).
Other fluids will work, but I will only use Honda MTF from now on.

isn't designed for the high pressure of a tranny, and as u stated the civic manual states it's only a short
term substitute...so what should i run?
The pennzoil syncromesh is what weight that it is so it only comes in one flavor. You can get the gm syncromesh which is the same thing they have two flavors, one for normal open differentials and the second has a friction modifier additive for lsd. I would just goto autozone and get the pennzoil as it will be cheaper. I've been running it in my hx 5 speed for at least 60k miles now and nothing has happened one bit to the tranny or anything. When I switched to the syncromesh this was before honda brought out their new stuff so it's been a long time but before that I ran the honda mtf and I wasn't happy running that but the new is supposed to be like 1000x better from what I've heard.
although for gm models will the pennzoil syncromesh work for me? if not, besides honda mtf what can i safely run?? please i need to kno asap
Only reason why they say to use OEM stuff for there vehicles, because its THERE vehicle. They will make more money off of you if you stay with there brands. If honda had there own tires or any other manufacture they would say recommend only our tires. same principle. All fluids meet certain additives and that can be found just by looking in the back of the bottle.

FWIW I use the Lucas 80/90 and its the same as Syncromesh... goes in like molasses, but works awesome. Lucas 80/90 stopped a 3rd gear grind on my DD Integra with 280,000 Miles on the tranny.
