Default DC4 LS Manual Tranny Problems

I'm thinking of getting a new transmission soon.

The previous owner was a dumbass driver. Car is beatin.

Issues:
2nd gear grinds (once in a while it goes in)
3rd rarely pops out on deceleration
4th when slowing down the shifter bounces back and forth like crazy
5th gear doesn't engage unless the tranny and motor are nearly rev matched
5th gear always pops out when letting off the throttle.

Can someone tell me how a person can mess up a tranny this bad?
What caused it?
I definitely need a new tranny I'm assuming as nearly all the gears have a problem. No fixing this one.

Then again the tranny has 280XXX miles.

You answered your own question.
Sure, driven properly you might be able to get alot more out of it but com'on.. how long did you expect it to last.

I can fix it, but it would be cheaper to just buy a new tranny haha

lol I just know a gsr with same miles and running smooth. Different trannies, though.

Guess it is a lot of miles. Time to get a used tranny with less miles...

Does anyone think it has anything to do with the short shifter/shifter linkage?

The previous owner was a noob at installing things.

Maybe part of the reason (gears popping out) has to do with the short shifter/shift linkage.

It could have been caused by the short shifter, aftermarket short shifters kill trannies, most of the time because people try to shift likes its 2 fast 2 furious and it destroys trannies. i would reccomend and oem shifter. as long as your shift linkage hasnt been hacked up or cut and welded it should be fine

Cool thanks.

I have a feeling it's an eBay short shifter, also. I really haven't checked, though.

wouldn't hurt to change the transmission fluid with some synchromesh MT fluid.

I heard it fixes some synchro issues but what about the gears that pop out?

Also I changed my trans fluid with Honda MTF about 100 miles ago.

The gears popping out is due to the gears being worn down from the synchronizers not doing their job. Every time you hear a grind, it's shaving the gears a little. I had an old Prelude that did this, when it was time to rebuild they said the gears were shot from the grinding.... Synchromesh won't be able to fix this, sorry to say.

I'm using synchromesh in my 95 GSR.. It helped with some of the harsh shifting and some of the grinds..

I think as long as the weight is 5W-30 it should be fine. It's kinda like how they recommend you only use Honda oil and oil filters. All about money if you ask me. Penzoil and Amsoil are reputable.

If I remember correctly (dont want to get flamed for being wrong, especially on the interwebs lololol) Honda oil is Penzoil.

Syncromesh is not 5W-30 the last time I checked.. it will cure the problem temporarily but destroy the bearings permanently; and no I don't know this from personal experience :rolls eyes:

You can't buy different weights for the synchromesh?
