Default Its Alive, Alive I Tell You!!! But need help

Ok I fired up my B20/Vtec that has not ran in a few months (3-5 months). It fired right up with no smoke out of the exhaust. But when you pull the oil cap there is a ton of smoke BLOWing out. I asume its blow by and wanted to know what you guys thought?

I mean the motor still runs smooth and still feels strong, but pull the oil cap and it will feel my shop with smoke. Now the car from what I can tell does not have a PCV system on it at all. I got it that way and thats teh way it sits. From what I can see that black box thats on the back of the block is not on the car at all. The only tube thats pulling off the valve cover is the one that goes from the valve cover to my short ram intake. What do you guys think I should do? Is there a quick fix? Please help...

I would go with a PCV system instead of a PVC style. jk You could start by doing a crankcase vent. I would go valve cover vent, but I'm sure people have other options.

Well thank you very much I fixed it.

How do I vent the crankcase with out that box being there?

you can run a catch can setup which will vent it through the head

I usually don't drain the catch can back to the engine. So you could run valve cover vents to ventilated catch can. Drain if it is getting too much oil vapor or oil.

If I do this setup wont the smoke that it coming from the valve cover just blow into the catch can then out of the breather under my hood?

Google the Endyn catch can. I have a thread on here that shows you what you need if you decide to piece it together instead of purchasing a complete kit from endyn. I saved a crap load of money peicing it together myself.

Now thinking the fact that I do not have a PCV system on the car I need to add one. With that in mind do I need to do this: http://honda.hybrids.jp/b20tech/b20-pcv.shtml ? I checked and I do have a 96 and newer B20 bottom end. So it does not have a way to vent the block. I can just order this kit: http://theoldone.com/components/breather/ and vent with the valve cover? If I use this kit im not sure where to put the line that Is supose to go to the back of the block since my motor does not have that port.

Another thing I could do is get one of those ebay sealed ones with two ports. Then I could do one port to the valve cover and the other to the back of the intake and create a vacum system that would pull the vaper back to the motor while leaving the oil in the catch can?

What the #2 system im not sure that the BLOCK is getting the venting it needs to run good and safe...

These are the parts you can buy if you dont buy the complete kit from Endyn. But you will need to find a used catch can.

You shouldn't have smoke blowing out of the valve cover. I've done this to numerous cars that are running properly to begin with. I don't like draining back into the block because the oil vapor that ends up in the catch can seems to get moisture mixed with it. Usually when the aluminum can catches condensation in the morning, then oil vapor mixes into it and gets circulated back into you engine. I'm sure there are alot of people that recirculate it, but that is just the reason I don't like to.

Well there is a ton of smoke coming out of the valve cover. I do not plan on putting the oil from the catch can back into the motor tho.

I would really like to know what this smoke is from and how to fix it?

What does the smoke smell like? Or is it just cold there that you could see the smoke rising up from the valve cover?

ditto. Quite possibly have a blown headgasket. No way to tell until you do a leakdown test. If you do a leakdown and are getting pressure into your cooling system or out of the exhaust or intake, You could have a gasket problem. Pull the radiator cap when you do a leakdown and see if it pressurizes your cooling system. If you don't know where to listen for leakdown, get somebody that does and let us know. Good luck.***** a compression test, useless and misleading.

Wow thanks for your kind words. lol

So lastnight I fired it up and let it run a bit. The car has a ton of stuff thats funny. Check out my list and see what you think:

The comp is low on 2 slugs: 1-100psi
2-180psi
3-180psi
4-40psi
It has a ton of blowby. But the more the motor runs the better it seems to get. The smoke from the head is slowly going away.

There is no fan on the car at all and it does not over heat.

There is NO SMOKE AT ALL from the exhaust.

I hooked up a catch can and now the blowby is filtered thought it then back to the motor. Well the oil that is in the can looks like milk. But the oil in the crank case is nice and golden brown (no milk).

What do you guys think? Whats the problom with my motor?

put a little bit of oil in the cylinder and see if the compression goes up.

You need to do a leakdown. Sell that compression tester to get a leakdown tester. Sure it told you that you have a problem, but what is it exactly? The leakdown test will tell you if it is blowby, headgasket, leaky intake or exhaust valves. Until you do that, I don't know what advice to give you. I've never been able to diagnose an engine with a compression tester. Everybody I watch trying to diagnose an engine always starts with a compression tester, then goes to the leakdown. What the f did the compression tester do other than waste your time. Get rid of that thing. don't mean to be a dick, but we need some leakdown testing, and where the air pressure is going will tell you what is wrong. Good luck.

Ok lastnight I put some oil in the slug and did the comp test yall told me to. The comp did lower each time so it looks like the rings.

Im tired of fighting this B20/Vtec so I think im going to put it on a motor stand and throw a B20 or a B18 back in it so I can atleast drive the car. Last night I had it running good. Then the rad blew up. This dam car is fighting me tooth and nail. (always wanted to say this)

Im looking for a new rad, Probly going with a bigger performance unit. Then some slim fans and see where we are from there.
